Each time I start I get this error message.
Runtime error!
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime library
Program:C:\ProgramFiles\GOG Galaxy\Games\NWN\Diamond\nwmain.exe.

abnormal program termination.

The above is the message I get and then program has stooped working
If I persist and I do restartind the NWN shortcut then eventually the game Will start but usally it takes 3 or 5 goes to get into the game.
Now I read somwhere here that I should install a later version of Visual c++ which I did and I also tried the patch criiticalbuid for nwn 1.69. but alas neither fixed this issue
please can someone help

Which operating system are you using?

This game has serious issues with Galaxy and also can fail if installed inside the program files folder. So uninstall the game and then install it back in a folder like C:\GAMES\....... Then try to run the game like that. If that does not work, try to run the game outside of Galaxy, by going directly that folder and running nwmain.exe in XP SP3 compatibility mode.

Goodluck.
I heard on another thread that certain ATI graphics cards caused this issue - do you have one?

I was having the same issue. I reinstalled the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86) and changed the compatability mode for nwmain.exe to Windows XP (Service Pack 3). After doing those two things it is working for me.
Thanks for the advice.
I run win10 , on toshiba laptop ,core i7,raedon graphics. Is about 4 years new.
Originally was win7. upgrde was done twice , I do not like but thats just me .
anyway inside the NWN folder I did select the run in compatibilty mode XP SP2.
So far this has worked!

um,Engerek01, that bit about reinstalling my gog game, Is there a choice given about where to install the game?
To be honest I never noticed.

Until I get the error message again I am not game to alter anything

I am glad it worked. Ofcourse you dont have to install again if it worked for you. I just wanted to adress all the possible causes/solutions that we have seen in this forum.

About installing bath, I believe you are using Galaxy. Click the GOG.COM icon on TOP-LEFT. Then Settings. Here you will see where you can install the games. I changed mine to D:\GAMES\GOG Games. This will avoid any possible problems because of the "Program Files" special folder restrictions.

Enjoy. Which class are you going to play? :))

I am about to reinstall nwn 1 from gog, this time I will try to put it in C:
I am not sure but I think the problem lies in all the microsoft visual basic c++ years There are four or five installed.
Can these be uninstalled? and redone
My copy of NWN2 plays for hours without any hiccups.
I have returned to this and nwn1 because a lot of the time I do not have an broadband nbn connection so I I can't play games like mass effect or dragonage. It is not right that this is so as I bought discs of both. I also have the discs for both NWN1 and 2 and I have played a lot of modules, such as andarians first Sight and Citaldel . Bastard of Kostiigan was brilliant and so many others.I like to play as a ranger but spell selection is pitiful.
I have tried Monk , all the way, the same with Sorceror and Wizard, Druid. all as pure chars. But that waas some years ago. I get bored with fighter and limited skills, So I have quite a few chars that don't get to far past the second act.

current in nwn2 I am lvl 10 ranger, decideing whether to choose a dinosaur companion cause I don't think this was an option originally
better go
best regards

Necropost, I know, but this was almost the exact answer I was looking for. In my case I had restored from a backup and didn't want to reinstall from scratch to get it working. I had forgotten compatibility mode, I use Win 7 instead of XP, and I hadn't installed VC 2008 Redist.
