Hi all

So I'd like to ask which order should this series be played in? I've never played it before but it's always stuck in my mind as a game I'd like to play. I think I played with a friends Uru game once but nothing plot spoiling.

I've learnt that GOG doesn't currently have all of the Myst games? if that's the case what would be the best chronological order to play the following:

Uru
Riven
Real Myst
Myst Masterpiece edition
Myst V - End of ages

Any help would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks!
1-Myst ME / Real Myst - Same game, same thing in terms of timeline. Real Myst is a 3D remake (with a tiny bit of extra content)
2-Riven
3-URU
4-EOA
Here is the full list:

1. Myst*
2. Riven
3. Myst III: Exile (not on GOG)
4. URU (I haven't played it but I have read that it is not as good as the rest of the series)
5. Myst IV: Revelation (not on GOG)
6. Myst V: End of Ages

* I would advise to play the Masterpiece Edition rather than realMyst, the latter being a full 3D remake that did not age as well as the "pre-rendered" original game.

Edit for clarification.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother with URU. Just download the following:

- Myst Masterpiece or realMYST - essentially the same game. realMYST is easier due to the 3D, plus it has an extra age. But if you're planning on playing Riven, stick with Masterpiece - the transition back to pre-rendered environments might be a bit jarring.
- Riven - definitely play this second, but understand that it's a much more complex game. Don't expect to beat it overnight - treat it as a long term project. And above all else, do not - under any circumstances - consult a walkthrough or strategy guide. You will totally ruin the experience. As tempting as it might be to look up a hint, if you're stuck, just save your game and come back to it another day.

I want to second that. I consulted a walkthrough ones, and not even because I needed an answer to a puzzle, but because, very uncharacteristic for this game, I ran into a point of no return situation and wanted to make sure I wasn't messing up my game. Walkthroughs for this game are so compact you can't look for one thing and not get information on something else. For me just glancing at one line too many gave me an insight that put all the elements I had carefully written down into one perspective. I don't think I was far from that realization, but damn was that not my intention. This game is briljant, in both it's puzzles and it's storytelling. Enjoy it the only way you can, through all the hardships the game will throw at ye. Nothing is illogical here. When you're stuck, all you need is another puzzlepiece and than all will become clear.

While that is the release order, the chronological order of the story would have Myst IV before URU.

I also disagree about RealMyst. I think its superior to Masterpiece Edition in pretty much every way.

I also don't get why you would want to play URU before Revelations.

In fact, Myst I-IV and Uru with its Extensions (To D'Ni and Path of the Shell) at two loosly connected storylines. You'll get the connection through Myst V and by reading the books.
Generally, the Uru games are a bit different in style because of the full 3D and mostly different puzzle styles.

It's a pity, Revelations is not on GOG, yet. It is one of the greatest games of all time, I think. Great combination of visuals, sound (atmosphere!!) and tough puzzles that'll give you a hard time.

I enjoyed every single moment of all the games. You should try to get the missing episodes as well.
old post BUT Myst III is now out.
the order of release date is
Myst
Riven
Myst III
Uru
Myst IV
Myst V

however, the "little" girl from Myst IV is a young 30ish woman in Uru(Arus's daughter ???)
but then again time is relative in this crazy mixed up world.
I have only complete Myst (orignal) but have played enough through the others to know about this.
not enough to know why the age drop in Myst IV of the subject matter to this game's objective
I do know that Myst one had a lot of "ages" in the same island so anything goes, as is Legacy of Kain.
Uru begins in Nevada(or some Earth place) I would assume. Then on a whim of the nonsensical and IMO, quite flakey woman in the cave. takes you to the odd world or two so the question is only about Uru and Myst IV more than the order of the other games.
avoid "Real" Myst Masterpiece it takes a heavy hunk of hardware, one I would rather be used in bigger games. use an older PC for these, don't waist your big rig on Myst anything!

me I do this

Uru
Myst
Riven
Myst III
Myst IV
Myst V

Uru is to me a prologue to this nonsense. Atrus narrates the opening of Myst "I realise when I fell into the fizzure" that is after your stint in Uru. in which "you are you.

SPOILER ALERT:
not some whack double talk altar ego of someone else(I won't say who).
