Hi all,
So I just purchased Riven because of the ongoing sale, downloaded and installed the game, but the game won't run.
I normally have my desktop at 1280x800, so when I try to load Riven it readjusts my screen to 640x480, and that's it. No blue screen of death, no loading screen, it just kicks me back to windows at 640x480 every time.
Please let me know if you need more info, but I'm running Vista 32 bit, w/ 3 GB ram and a Core 2 Duo CPU 8600 @ 2.4 ghz.
It's a Lenovo T400, and I'm running the ATI mobility radeon hd 3450 in discrete mode.
Thanks.

Hi,
What comaptibility settings are applied to the shortcut ?
If it's not ticked, tick the 'Run as Admin' checkbox.

I've tried both in XP SP 2, and w/out compatibility, but neither work.
And yes, "run as admin" is checked.
Also, not sure if this is important, but I'm running in Vista Basic, and when I try to run Riven, there's a little window which pops up from my taskbar saying something about "Vista BAsic" and the display settings. It goes away very quickly, so I can't quite read it.

What does 'discrete mode' means exactly regarding your graphics card ?
Any chance Vista's UAC or your AV are stopping the game from booting properly ?
And maybe you could use Print Screen to get a screenshot of that message about Vista and the display settings. I don't know if it's of any use, but it couldn't hurt to check.

I'm not sure whether this is 100% accurate, but from my understanding my video card, as I'm using a notebook, has two modes which you can switch from through the bios.
Integrated - uses less resources, longer battery life, but no 3D capabilities
Discrete - less battery life, but I can run some games in 3D.
As for a screenshot, I'll try to get that, but the message goes as quickly as it comes, so might be tricky.
UPDATE:
I managed to get a screenshot of the popups, hopefully this will be useful?
Thanks everyone!
Also, I checked Windows task manager after I tried loading Riven.exe, and it says that there is an instance of Riven.exe running after I get dumped back to 640x480 desktop, even though I can't alt-tab to any instance of Riven.exe.

Have you tried ticking the checkbox for "disable visual themes" on the shortcut ?
Maybe tick the "disable desktop composition" checkbox too...

Just tried each, one at a time, and both together too.
No combination works, still the same =(
I am having the exact same problem, I'm running vista 32bit home premium on a Compaq Presario CQ50, 3gb of ram wit a Dual Core AMD Athlon QL-60 and a NVIDIA GeForce 8200M G

I have the game for Vista 64 bit. It runs fine if you're compatability settings are checked to Windows 65, and then in the check boxes under "Settings" you have each of the following boxes checked; Run in 640x480, Disable visual themes, Disable desktop composition, Disable display scaling on high DPI settings.
I'm not sure if it will work for another system, though, and even with these settings I got the ocasional error where audio wouldn't play or one specific instance where a movie played overlayed on top of a screen shot where it was supposed to fade to black and then have the movie play.
I have the exact same problem. It just switches the resolution and sits there. The game registers as a process in my task manager, and I'm able to open multiple instances of the game, but they never work.

I've tried all these suggestions (and more) and nothing has worked.
I had same issues on Windows 7 64-bit. If you set the compatibility mode to Windows XP Service Pack 3 then it should run on both Vista as well as Windows 7.
hello!
it is me! you know... vista 32
same problem here. unfortunately, after trying every suggestion from the thread nothing happened...
and the irony is that i registered mostly for this game...

great news!
redownloaded & reinstalled on vista 32 (different pc), followed (again) the suggestions and now the game runs properly.
same presigure, different pc. who knows...

I know I'm kicking a dead horse, but I just had this problem.

My solution was to right click the shortcut, go to properties, go to compatibility tab, click on 'show settings for all users', and disable all checked boxes...

and ta-da, riven is now playable.
