When I save a game and subsequently restore it, I get sent to a different location. For example if I start the game and save it (on the dock), when I restore it I am in the Library? which I have not yet visited. Saving in other places also seems to always send me to the Library.

That's intended behaviour. Any save made on the Island, Myst, will load you back to the library. The other Ages also have 'load points' for when restoring saves made while on those Ages. The progress of what you already did on the different Ages is kept though, it's just that the load points are fixed.

I played Myst when it first came out years ago and I did not recall that this was how the restore worked.
