I run a Vista 64 bit system with the newest versions of Quicktime and iTunes..... (known to cause problems with disc versions of Myst).
I installed Myst from gog.com, but when I launch it in my admin account (clearning it through the UAC), it loads the low res black screen with the "thinking" mouse icon, and just stays there forever. These are not unlike the problems I had when trying to load my Myst Masterpiece from my disc... I was hoping gog/cyan resolved this before distribution of the digital version, but maybe not.
Possible culprits: vista, 64 bit OS, newer version of quicktime.
Ideas?

is iTunes necessary for Myst to load?

Jenks: is iTunes necessary for Myst to load?

No, just QuickTime, you can use QuickTime Alternative or QuickTime Lite if you don't want to use the regular crappy QuickTime thingie. Just google it.
Myst is my first game to download, but it's not recognized by windows, I did the UAC settings and now its asking me what do I want to open Myst with ? any suggestions. Win 7 64bit
installed Myst, but got the following message when I tried to start the game:
"unable to execute. createprocess failed code 740 the requested operation requires elevation"

I also had the black-screen-syndrom, tried to fix it using various hacks found on the web, including, but not limited to, unsinstalling QuickTime, the game, reinstalling old QuickTime, and so on.

What worked -> installing the latest QuickTime, not the one shipped with the game, not the one on my computer but latest QuickTime from Apple, which turned out to be 7.7 for me. Then game works OK. A little frustrating it's not really fullscreen, but does work.

Have a nice day,

Running Windows 7 SP1 Professional 64 Bit

Upon clicking New or Continue (once a player has been created) I am getting the following:

Exception type: Access violation
Call stack (14 levels):
0x004436AB
0x00441885
0x00440D81
0x0052CD18
0x0052CB48
0x0052C93F
0x0052C6AF

0x004EF8A0
0x004EEDCC
0x004EE438
0x004E7E56

<end>

Does anyone have any ideas why I am getting call stack violations?
I'm running Windows 8.1 and I went online to download a version of the game that would run on Win 8. Upon first load, I am having the same issue as many previous users. I checked and unchecked the compatibility options and nothing worked. The game loaded fine but when it opens up all I have is a black screen and sound effects. The cursor is in the shape of a hand but nothing else is visible. I just downloaded the game from this site and it doesn't work. Can someone help?
If I recall correctly there's a setupmenu you can only get to from the explorer. Perhaps you need to alter some settings there?

Some other suggestions. Try starting the game as an administrator, or unplug your speakers from your soundblaster should you use one. Just plug it into the motherboard (at the back of your computer, you don't need to completely remove the soundcard) and choose the appropriate output (rightclick the volume thingy next to the clock in the bottomright corner to open the menu). Some games (Dust, Monkey Island SE, Rogue legacy) don't work with soundblasters. I don't think Myst is one of em (it works fine for me), but you never know.

I have this same problem - I installed Quicktime 4 which made the intro movies play but nothing else happens. I am running Window7, 64bit. I have tried adjusting compatibility but nothing has worked so far

I'm running Win7-64 and installing the latest QT player worked for me too. Thanks for the hint.
I am running Windows 10 and I have tried everything to get Myst Masterpiece Collection to run and it simply will not go beyond the Black screen with a hand for a pointer. I am the Admin, all updates are done, check compatibility and yet nothing is working. I have uninstalled and reinstalled too. Any other suggestions?

Have you tried using ScummVM? They just added support for Myst ME
