I've reached the final age and have appeared to reach a dead end. I'm standing in front of a view of Riven with crystals in front of me. Is this the "end" or is there more to do?

*SPOILERS*
If you used the crystals on Rime to get the image of Riven, yep, that's it.

*POSSIBLY A SPOILER*
Unlike the later games which all had actual endings, Myst was very open ended. So much so that it didn't even have a real "ending" so to speak, just a place where it stopped progressing. You're basically told "enjoy the books" and that's kinda it. I sometimes think it's the one really unlikeable part about the game in that it has no real conclusion so to speak.

If you play Riven, you'll get to see the story come full cycle. That is, there's a true ending.
The ending in Myst occurs when you come to the solution of the puzzle of who's the brother saying the truth and who's lying and whatever happened to their father (both are lying and the father is imprisoned) and who you believe should be saved (the father). After that, you're free to keep looking around until Atrus needs your help again, that is, at the beginning of Riven.
The Rime age was added to real Myst to both have something new to look at and a hint of Riven.
Yes, I much enjoyed how Riven continued where Myst left off. But it's also understandable why Myst never mentioned Riven originally, seeing as how they hadn't planned to make a second game and so never said in-game what Atrus was doing or how his sons tricked him.
...looking back I suppose that's why I liked Myst IV, since it brings them back.

Well, Atrus mentions Riven, albeit in very vague terms.
"Oh, and one more favor. I am fighting a foe much greater than my sons could
even imagine. At some point in the future, I may find it necessary to request
your assistance."
Since Myst was quite different from previous games, they didn't knew if it would work. So they left a door slightly open while keeping it vague so it could stand on it's own if it didn't sell well.

*SPOILERS*
Riven's name is not mentioned but the Age itself is mentioned in Myst.
From Atrus' final speech in K'veer:
"Hmm, it is done. Oh, I have many questions for you, my friend, but my writing can not wait. I fear that my long delay may have already had a catastrophic impact on the world in which my wife, Catherine, is now being held hostage."
Add that to the bit POLE7645 quoted, also from Atrus' final speech in K'veer, and It looks like they already had at least a general idea on where they wanted to go with the plot on a second game.
You're also told how Sirrus and Achenar tricked Atrus.
From Atrus' speech in K'veer, green book :
"They devised a plan - an evil plan. I had no idea to what extent their greed had progressed. Their own mother... they used their own mother (oh, my dear Catherine) to lure me here to D'ni. Of course I could return to Myst, except that they removed a single page from my Myst linking book. I cannot return without that page."

I guess it's been too long since I played Myst then, because I could've sworn that last bit about Atrus speaking of Catherine was from the beginning of Riven.
The rest of the stuff I knew about, and what I was trying to say was that Myst has no decisive ending in that it's "okay here's your ending scene, roll credits" kinda thing. It just keeps going afterwards. It was the first as you said and so it did do things a bit differently.
For those like me who played the game long before the sequal was ever announced, all we had left were some words hinting at more but nothing to go with it. Unless you read the first book of course, which I couldn't find a copy of until a few years after Riven'd already been released, then it woulda been a lot more clear.
Which reminds me, I need to eventually read Ti'anna and D'ni, the other two books. Was so disappointed when I THOUGHT I'd found the first book and it turned out to be Ti'anna instead. Nothing like opening the book and reading the first chapter only to go "the heck is this?"
Sorry, I'm rambling off topic.

Yeah, i agree, they were just hints back then, and it's easy to figure them out now that we know the whole story.
As for the books, i was really happy when someone gifted me the Myst Reader which contains the 3 books: Book of Atrus, Book of Ti'Ana and Book of D'ni. It was a great gift, since i now have all the material in a single volume ;)
