As part of Myst's 25th year anniversary, Cyan had dropped teasers about something forthcoming relating to the series.

As it turns out, based on a small passage of text written at https://myst.com/ it appears as though they've been able to acquire the rights to Myst III & IV (at long last) and plan to, alongside the remaining titles in the Myst series, re-release the games updated to be Windows 10 compliant at some point later this year.

In addition to that, they also mention plans to release a limited edition physical package of the games.

The text from the site, for those not inclined to visit it:
In the fall of 1993 Cyan released Myst, the surrealist, graphic adventure video game that became the world of millions of explorers. It surpassed even our wildest expectations. Not only did it become the best selling PC game of the 20th century, but it also had an impact on our culture. Over the years, Myst has been referenced in television shows, movies, books, comics, and more. It has been credited by other creators as an inspiration as they built their own amazing worlds. It’s even made it’s way into the Smithsonian Institute and other notable museums.

With 2018 marking the 25th anniversary of Myst, Cyan would like to celebrate this journey.

Over the last few years we’ve been working to procure the rights to make all of the Myst games available. As an indie developer, resources are limited for development, and acquiring rights isn’t always an option. But we managed to finally talk to all the right people and departments and put some funding together to try to make it happen. With agreements in place, we’re happy to announce that we’ll be releasing updated (for Windows 10) versions of all the Myst games later this year!

And for those of you who are interested, we wanted to create a physical collection in a unique package with a cool artifact — a limited, collectors edition, only available for the 25th anniversary. Stay tuned.

There will probably be more adventures in the Myst universe, but we’re reserving 2018 for remembering our journey, and making something special to commemorate the last 25 years.

Thanks so much for your support!

The ending has not yet been written…

#Myst25

This is delightful news; but I shan't rush the anticipation.
Personally, a big part of my enjoyment (especially when it comes to III) was Jack Wall's music and I want to be naive and believe that they'll re-release the music for the games as well (though being realistic, I doubt this happens at all, much less with Jack's music for III & IV).

I know Robyn released a digital remaster of the Myst soundtrack not that long ago and that was nice. I wish it were feasible for him and Tim Larkin to do remasters for Riven and Myst V, even if only digital releases, to follow along with the games.
What's going to happen to Starry Expanse, I wonder? And is this the same scheme as with the realMyst and Masterpiece Edition- a brand-new game, so empty your pockets? You know they ain't gonna port anything to Mac or Linux either.

That's still being worked on, last I read (Cyan gave their approval to it and it would be a nightmare for them to backpedal this late into its development just because of this news). I can't see any re-release of Riven interfering with it, especially given that at the current time we still don't know the extent of work Cyan's putting into these beyond compatibility updates (I'm optimistic overall, but I doubt we see any real significant change as far as graphics/etc. are concerned with any of the games).

As to the question of whether this will be a "empty your pockets" situation - too early to tell currently, but looking at it from both sides of things - if they're JUST compatibility updates then I can see reason for them releasing free updates to the existing games but charging for both III and IV since they're both "new" to the digital marketplace.

I'm thinking both III and IV won't be going too cheap depending on how extensive the licensing deal for each is and who all gets a piece of the sales. Hopefully it isn't a situation like Night Dive had with their Turok games that necessitated $20 price tags for each (not to say in each situation that such a price is unreasonable, however).

For now it's just playing the patience game and hoping they dole out the specifics of things in the months to come.
Sorry for the outburst. I'd like it if this triggers a renewed interest in Myst and Uru- try if you like, but you can't really play Uru Live alone! Incidentally, did you know the Miller brothers grew up in a Judaeo-Christian home?

Tigersong: Sorry for the outburst.
No need to apologize - I didn't view it as an outburst.

We're all basically in the dark currently aside from this news that Cyan finally managed to secure deals to sell III and IV after years of both games seemingly rotting in Ubisoft's garage of broken dreams and it's absolutely understandable to view it with a skeptical eye given how some devs have handled similar announcements and even Cyan themselves tending to just remake a game (or outsource a remake to another dev if need arise) and then expect fans to just go "okay, I'll give you money all over again - I loved doing so the first time!" without some hesitance.

For me personally, I'm not expecting something miraculous to happen when it comes time to release the games (and being 100% honest, if they all go up as "must purchase again" titles then I'll likely bide my time until they hit a sale price I'm comfortable with and then scoop them up then) but am otherwise happy that this is actually a thing that's happening after years and years of thinking hell would have frozen over long before Cyan could do anything with III and IV, much less tweak the games for modern compatibility.

Yes, most people in America grew up in Judaeo-Christian homes. What's your point?...;) Rather strange and odd question.

..I need to think before typing. Somewhere I read (but where?) that the Millers had Middle Eastern parents.
Will the graphics be improved or just updated to play on newer operating systems? Would love there be better graphics. Loved all the games. Am playing on a 2560x1080 monitor and it would be great to play full screen without stretching the picture. Updated graphics would also be great as I love Uru and never take it off my XP computer and have played through it numerous times.

Just updating, sadly
"With the help of our friends at GOG.com, the games have been upgraded to run on Windows 10."
But Myst 3 can be run under ResidualVM with widescreen support, i wonder which method will GoG choose..
Being able to get Myst III and IV on GOG will be great, as they are the only ones I don't have here. I got rid of all my boxed versions years ago. It would be great to see them all ported to macOS too, though I do dualboot my iMac.

What I would really like to see is proper widescreen support for URU, and the ability to use a gamepad, or at least an updated control scheme for mouse and keyboard that is a bit less clunky and more in line with modern third & first person games!

they have started a kickstarter which has already been funded, I think the linking book is the attraction - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1252280491/myst-25th-anniversary-collection

I was just looking at it when you replied!

It seems that they are just focusing on Windows 10 compatibility, with a longer view to making working versions for Macs, if and when they can. I could imagine that might be an option conisdering they've already more than doubled their goal!

No word on any updating for widescreen support - that's not really viable for the games with pre-rendered graphics anyway, unless they were remaking them from scratch, but for those with real-time 3D graphics it should be a minimum really. No mention of plans for specific games.

Just downloaded and installed URU to scratch that itch, but even though it still looks great after 15 years even in 4:3 ratio, the control scheme is just so clunky, and no matter how much they insist that it was designed to be played in third person, first person viewpoint is much more immersive and controllable.
