I bought Riven back in 2014 and played it a decent amount, and saved my game file. Now I have reinstalled Riven on a different PC but am unable to load the save game that worked back when I originally bought Riven. It says saved games from the CD-ROM version cant be used by the DVD version (see attached screenshot).

So out of curiosity, does anyone know if GOG changed the version they publish from the CD-ROM to the DVD version? And more importantly, might there be any way to salvage my saved game so that I can load it with the current GOG Riven?

Thanks in advance for any help or info!

Another user pointed out that the version of the game that is downloaded when using GOG Galaxy is the DVD version, at the time of the post at least. You don't mention using Galaxy, so I assume they've updated the version that can be downloaded from the site as well.

Interesting! I do use Galaxy, but it wasn't around back when I purchased Riven. I should try the download version to see if it is the same as the Galaxy version (I'm guessing it will be).
Just to close the loop on this in case it might help future readers, I was able to load my old Riven save using the download version of Riven (not the version installed by GOG Galaxy). @TheMonkOfDestiny thanks for the tip! After looking at the riven.cfg and rivin.ini of the two installs, it looks like the download version is the CD-ROM version and the Galaxy version the DVD version (see attached screenshots).

Glad I could be of some help as I felt a bit bad not being able to answer the bigger question of whether you could convert your save between the two versions.

It's also good to know that, for now at least, GOG hasn't replaced every version of the game with the DVD version.
Where can I find the downloaded version of Riven?
I tryed using CD version savegames by downloading the game without GOG galaxy but seems it doesn't work. Also, when I install it in that way the game again appears into GOG Galaxy so seems that now both download ways are the same.

Maybe there is another place to download the CD version from GOG?

Actually I do it by selecting the arrow from the game -> view downloads -> download offline backup game installers.
