wondering if it's at all possible to hide to white / grey menu bar at the top of the screen

A bit late, but anyway - no, there is no way to hide it. It seems to be integral part of interface and it will be there, no matter what set of options will be declared for "window" in preferences.

It was the thing for some games released in first years after Windows 95 release.
