Hello fellow GoG'ers!
After being absent from this forum for a few months (due to moving countries and various other things) I was absolutely DELIGHTED to find that there were two delicious new releases:
HoMM III (Which, after Master of Orion 2 and Civilization III has to be my most played game)
Might and Magic I - VI
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! INSANE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally I could play World of Xeen without the bugs! Rubbing my hands I bought the games, installed and got into heaven... Then when I got to the tower, and that tattooed lady-warrior guard tells me to piss off unless I have the key...
What happened to the subtitles? The reason I ask is I'm profoundly Deaf and the subtitles were one of the reasons I LOVED Xeen back in the day. What happened to them??? (The "normal" subtitles for town people are fine BTW)
Secondly, when i run this game, dosbox seems to be SLIGHTLY askew, and moves the screen down a bit, so a part of the screen is missing from the bottom - JUST up to the health bars - and there's a nice big black strip of nothing on the top of the screen.
I just tried to take a screen shot, and when I pasted it, it's perfect. Very weird.
Any ideas my friends?
This question / problem has been solved by Ralackkimage
I'm not sure about the dosbox issue. I think I know what you mean and to be honest, I thought it was supposed to be that way.
But for the subtitles, they're only displayed if the soundfile is not available or switched off in the options. So if you turn off Efx in the options menu, you get the subtitles.
I turned off sound.... =\
I'll try and fiddle around a bit more... I really do need these "scrolling" subtitle parts to know what to do as I suspect there will be more later on in the game...
I may have to start a new thread asking people for a transcript of every single instance of these parts if I cannot resolve this issue.
Checked all the conf files incase you can activate it in one of them?
Did you turn off sound by other means than turning off Efx and Music in the in-game options (tab key to access)? Because I'm 100% sure that'll do the trick.
If that for some reason won't work for you and you really need transcripts, I can write down the major speech parts for you. There really aren't many instances of recorded speech in the game.
Also, there's apparently a full voiced CD version of the game. I've never played that one, but it's not the one featured on GOG, so if you're by any chance referring to recorded speech from that version, you're out of luck for now, although it seems possible that that might change:

Actually I worked out the lack of subtitles is because of the screen problem. When I windowed it during these parts, I realised that the text was on the part of the screen that's been pushed down (I had forgotten how low they put the speech so I did not and could not even see a hint of it happening)
So my real question now is....
How do I fix the screen pushing itself down???
Not sure why this would happen myself but as a temporary solution could you not use your monitor settings and pull the screen up a bit so its all visable in fullscreen mode?
Yeah been thinking that too... I just have heaps of other stuff to do right now so I don't really want to be fucking around with the monitor every time I minimise the screen...
Hmmmmmmmm.
I'll try it and let you guys know how it goes. (I gotta replace my screen in a couple months when I get back from overseas, so that may fix the problem...)
BTW, my screen is (and I didn't buy it, my old one died and my stepdad gave me his old one) a LG Flatron L1717S
Just had a thought could you post the contents of the dosbox.conf file for world of xeen? It should be called dosboxmm45.conf or dosboxxeen.conf or something like that. I don't own the game otherwise I would check myself.
Here you go sir

Couple of things you could try to solve this. First change fullresolution=original to fullresolution= and put whatever your screens resolutions.
If that doesn't work then change it back to original and then change fullscreen=true to fullscreen=false and then change windowedresolution from original to whatever your monitor resolution is set at. This should make the game into a window everytime you start it up but it should cover the full screen so you can tweak where it sits on the screen.
YOU BEAUTIFUL PERSON YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I did the fullresolution=1240x1024 - but that stretches the picture a bit too much, reckon I'll do 1024x768.
Finally, I can play this game PROPERLY.
Cheers, and rep given.
