I found a couple relics, one has the "Of Light Magic" property and one "Of Fire Magic". At first I thought they gave bonuses to those magic skills, but they don't - at least no bonuses show up on the skills screen like they do with "increases effect of all X spells" items.

So what is this, just flavor text?

I seem to recall that some of the artifacts "of X magic" abilities may be bugged. They should provide a few points bonus to the relevant magic skill. This bonus might not stack with other item bonuses if you have something else equipped that boosts the same skill.
That makes sense, thanks. I had nothing else equipped that would boost Light Magic.

If you want to see if the bonus is functioning, then take the item off and cast a spell with a duration that varies with the caster's number of skill points. Check the duration, then cast the spell with the item on and compare the two durations. If the duration with the item is greater than the duration without, you know the bonus is working even if the stats screen doesn't show it.

Good idea. Day of the Gods at GM Light Magic skill level 23 - adds 125 to each stat regardless of the "of Light Magic" helm being worn or not. So I guess it's broken. Maybe Mok's patch or whatever fixes it, but I was playing without it.

Sad face.

Oh well. Its other bonuses might make it worth wearing anyway, depending on what other equipment you have.

Yeah, that helm and the Hermes boots were the only Relics I ended up wearing in the late/end game. Just beat the game last night btw.

Congratulations!
If what you describe is correct, then it's only this particular item (and perhaps others, but not the general "of X magic" attribute) that is bugged. I had my characters equip such items, usually generic rings, in all magic types they were proficient with and there was quite a noticeable difference in spell duration.

I'm going to verify this, but it will have to wait since I don't have a monitor now and am leaving on 2 weeks holidays tomorrow.

I'm willing to bet those generic items you've equipped had the "increases effect of all X spells" attribute, not "of X magic" attribute. My characters have been using the former successfully, it's only the latter that's bugged (assuming it's meant to work similarly to the former anyway).

Ah I see, you're probably right.
