Is there a patch or hotfix for this game that fixes these bugs in quest?
Unfortunately, I am not aware of such a patch.
My advice for playing Swords of Xeen:
* Play World of Xeen first; it's a much better constructed game (albeit not without its issues).
* Do not trust the game. The engine code is solid, but the scripting is not.
* Play on Adventurer mode. The game has major balance issues, including some enemies that are too strong for the area they appear in, and playing on Warrior will just make things worse in this regard. (Note that World of Xeen is fine on Warrior difficulty; it's specifically Swords of Xeen that isn't.)
* You don't need any Robbers or Ninjas, as the scripting almost never checks for Thievery, and there's a way to acquire that skill after character creation. For some reason, the default party has one of each; replace them with other classes. Knights and Barbarians have better hit rates than other classes, and in Swords of Xeen you need all the hit rate that you can get.
* Save frequently, and in multiple slots. Do not trust that the game will work as you'd expect.
* One example of a bug: Mr/ Wizard takes you to a different location depending on whether you're in combat or not; one of those locations is a sequence break.
* There's also a fountain that can underflow your unnatural aging, as well as a fountain that can keep giving you HP until overflow (happens when you exceed 32767), as well as an event that can permanently boost Personality without limit. Whether you abuse the latter two is up to you, though given that the game has major balance issues, I'd lean into considering it acceptable. (Fortunately, the permanent Personality boost has a check to prevent overflow.)
