I have this problem so often it's no longer funny. Every time I download a new game, it completely fills the screen, and hitting ALT-Enter makes it too small.

I ask for help, and someone says something like...

"If the windowed version is too small, you can increase its size by editing the Dosbox configuration file. Go to the game folder where you installed it and find a file called dosbox.conf or similar (probably dosboxMM.conf). Edit it in notepad. Find the line that says windowresolution=original and change it to what you want. e.g.

windowresolution=800x600"

...and my reaction to this is, HUH???

Is there anyone who can dumb this down a little? I'm not all-that computer savvy, and I do not know what a "Dosbox" is. I just want to be able to play a game without pausing the entire thing simply when I get a Skype message or an email!

Someone PLEASE dumb it down!

First step is finding the file to edit. If you have a desktop symbol of the game right-click it and you can see which dosbox files are used. Open the file path, go up a directory and you should be in the main directory of the game. There should be a file named dosboxmm or so. Open it with the windows editor.

There you can change windowresolution from original to 800x600 or so, it's explained in the text above, eventually you have to change the output from surface to something else like ddraw, it's explained in the text above.

After you've done so save the file and start the game.

Here you go. See attachments. It is for Dangerous Dave, but it's same for other DOSBox games like Might and Magic.

1. Locate the folder where the game is installed. If you don't know where, the default is C:\GOG Games\Might and Magic
2. Find the dosbox file. probably dosboxMM.conf
3. Double click file. It asks you to select a program to open it. Chose notepad or another text editor.
4. Find the line that says
windowresolution=
and change it to your desired value, like 800x600

Okay, this is a prime example of what I mean. I look at this explaination, and I'm like, "What is a "dosbox"? I right click the desktop option, click "Open", and it rarely does anything, certainly not open any file you describe. "Locate folder"/ " C:\GOG Games\Might and Magic "? What?

WHERE? Trying to search my files tends to start the game by accident, WHERE DO I LOOK?

So very, very tired, simply trying to make this game playable.

Again, DUMB IT DOWN, okay?To DUMBEST, if you have to. I'm not that computer-savvy, and don't know much about jargon.


Edit: Here is the problem as I am seeing it.

I open DOSBox 0.74 - 2 Manual on Notepad. And this is what it tells me to do:


- Right-click the DOSBox icon and select "Properties".

Done, no problem,

- Go to the "Compatibility" tab.

Done, no problem

- Click on "Change high DPI settings".

So far, so good.

- Tick "Override high DPI scaling behaviour" and set it to "Application".

NOW, we hit a snag. It won't let me do this. And I have no idea why. Any udeas?

What do you mean "it won't let me do this?" You don't see the option? You get an error message?

But you don't need to change it if you want to change the resolution. Just do what I did with the screenshots.

I suspect you're opening the wrong file in the wrong directory. Go up a directory and search for a file named dosboxmm or similar. It's possible that the .conf ending isn't shown, doesn't matter. Open this file with Notepad.

Oh yes, I forgot that's a thing.

What kmonster said is right. It's not the Manual file that you have to open, and you don't have to follow what's written there.

Instead find the dosboxmm.conf file. If you don't see a .conf ending, just open dosboxmm.
