I have a 30" monitor, so needless to say, running these old games fullscreen, gives me a headache :p

How can I run them in a window mode, with its original resolution? (I assume no upscalers exist)

I just bought the MM 1-6 pack

Alt+Enter switches DosBox from full screen to a window.

Kezardin is correct that pressing Alt+Enter will switch between fullscreen and windowed mode. If you want to set it to automatically start up in windowed mode, you just need to edit the .conf file. It's located in the install directory and will be called something like dosboxmm3.conf (for MM3... change that depending on which game you're playing). Open the file in notepad and look for a line that says "fullscreen=true". Change it to "fullscreen=false".

You are right that there are no upscalers in terms of actually increasing the resolution, but you can make the window bigger. This will keep the game's original resolution but will just enlarge all the pixels. I prefer to do this because the original resolution windows are really small on my high-res monitor. To make the window bigger, look in the .conf file for a line that says "windowresolution=original'. Change that to some other resolution, for example "windowresolution=1024x768". That will enlarge the window to use more of your monitor's pixels, even though the game will still only have the original number of pixels (if that makes sense). Think of it as "zooming in" on the game.
For MM6 the situation is a bit different. You can probably use the original way of switching into windowed mode (something like F7, it's in the docs), but it requires you to change some graphical settings on the system. The Grayface patches should help with that, AFAIK. Other than that, there are not many solutions to running this windowed under Windows, and there are definitely (and unfortunately) no upscalers available.

The situation for the older Dos games has been pretty much explained. Also, when you're editing the configs, you could as well change the upscaler to something you may like more, so instead of the pixelated normal2x, you could use hq2x. You can read more on this here.

Thanks a lot.

Which game do you recommend starting with? World of Xeen?

This is apparently a known issue with World of Xeen and there isn't really a fix. However, you can play the entire game with the keyboard, so it might be worth checking all the keyboard shortcuts. I found that to be a much easier way to play anyway.

You can read about the mouse behavior here:

For the DOS-based games (i.e. every game in the pack except MM6), most people recommend starting with MM3, but that's actually the only game in the pack I haven't played (yet). It uses an almost identical engine to World of Xeen, and then you can move on to World of Xeen and enjoy the improvements that were made. MM1 and MM2 are very old and harder to get into due to big technological limitations, but I found them to be surprisingly good. Worth going back for later, but MM3 or Xeen are better starting points.

MM6 is the most modern game in the pack (and doesn't use DOSBox), but it plays quite differently, with it's fully 3D world and switching between real-time and turn-based combat. It also involves LOTS of fighting with huge mobs of monsters. It's a good game but I liked Xeen better.

EDIT: I haven't played past MM6, but I hear good things about MM7 and MM8, which are similar to MM6 in style. Those are of course sold separately on GOG though.

I've tried the Alt+Enter to switch to windowed mode, but the Alt key has no effect; the Enter key continues to switch between combat & real time mode irrespective of the Alt key.

Toggle fullscreen with F4 for games 6-8; for 9 add +windowed 1 to the end of the shortcut's target.

The toggle on 6 & 8 seems to work, sort of ... the displays do not fully resolve, such that I can click on everything & actually play the game. The toggle on 7 won't work ... requires 16-bit resolution instead of 32, and I can't figure out how to change this in Windows 8. But I'm concerned the display problem will persist in 7 as in 6 and 8. Ideas?

Oh right; install the GrayFace Patch for each game--this fixes the fullscreen mode to work in 32-bit--and then fix the music (MM6, MM7, MM8).

Delete MM7-Rel.exe, then use MMResTool027fix2.zip to set your resolution.

Windowed mode is toggled with F4. If colours are messed up in windowed mode go to the properties for mm7.exe and remove the Windows 95 compatibility mode.
Id love to play MM6 and MM7 on Windows 10. Can anyone help me please?
