just realised that my reputation is -149 Bad! I have not got enough save games to find where i mucked up, probably accidentally threw a spell in town. Are their any programs to change the saves or amend the rep?

You didn't specify which game you're playing - there are editors for VI, VII VIII and IX here
Thanks, i am playing IV. This looks just like i need

I assume you meant VI, aka MM6? In that game, you can increase your reputation by donating to temples. So if you have money you can actually rocket up in reputation just by repeatedly donating. Might be worth a try if you don't want to mess with the editor.

I assume you are playing MM6 not MM4.

I think it wasn't an accidental spell but... some quests you have completed. Basing on what you wrote I'm almost sure that you have retrieved the candelabra and gave it to Andover Potbello, haven't you? And that results in -200 to reputation. You have probably solve the Goblin Watch code as well and received +50. Than your mighty deeds earned you magnificent +1 (at the beginning of the game it's hard to be a hero;) and here you are with -149. Math doesn't lie...
All the same, reputation is pretty broken in MM6, if you ask me. If you want Grandmaster Light magic you have to have the highest reputation rank in the game. That wouldn't be so bad except that reputation above a certain point decays/degrades back to 0 over time. And the higher your reputation, the fast it decays.

This pretty much forces you to leave a lot of the big quests in a sort of incomplete state until you have Lloyd's Beacon, Fly, Master Light Magic, and enough levels to QUICKLY travel about, complete a bunch of the quests in a very short period of time, and then grab Grandmaster Light Magic.

It's lame because you can't just play the game, you have to artificially "game" the game. Next time I play the game I'll definitely just use an editor to boost my rep when I have the other requirements for GM Light Magic.
There are other things that drop your reputation, such as traficking human remains. I can't remember if selling cobra eggs does it as well, or the spider queen quest. But the bones you find near cannibals, and Ethric the mad's skull definitely reudece your reputation.
Cobra eggs/spider queen heart is definitely fine. I do not remember the skulls causing any reputation problems, but then again, it's more than two years since I played. The bones were most certainly lowering it, but if you picked them up, you may just as well go and sell them, since there's no penalty for that. Also, Baa temples lower your reputation quite a lot. Can't remember whether it was just donating to them though.

Oddly I've never gotten the baa temple to reduce my reputation, and I've tried (yes, I'm one of those guys...). Although it does say in the strategy guide you get a rep penalty "for associating with" the temple of Baa, I haven't gotten it healing, donating, or wearing the cloak, although I did get it from the candelabra quest. It's always driven me crazy, but that seems to be the only place it's ever worked for me. However, I have definitely gotten a reputation drop from returning Ethric's skull to what's-his-face in Free Haven.
