I've played Might and Magic 8 a few times now. I think this may be my first time playing it on Windows 8, if that makes any difference (all my other runs were on Windows 7.) Everything has been going along normally as I started my run today, went to the Gorge to recruit a dragon, pumped skill points into him to get him to master level so I could get fly early on.

When I cast the spell though, the picture of the winged boots appears, and if I push Page up the icon will do the animation, but I won't fly at all, as if I've reached the ceiling already. It also stops me from being able to jump or use the jump spell.

I've tried it in different areas, and I have plenty of spell points when I use it. I've tried resetting a few times, traveling to different areas, resting at an inn, nothing seems to work. Before I cast it, jumping and the jump spell work fine, but once I use it I get stuck to the ground for some reason.

This is a bug I've never encountered before with this game and I'm not sure what the problem is.

Do you already play with GayFace' patch installed? If not, give it a try, maybe it fixes this glitch:

I thought the same thing and tried last night. No luck. I know I installed the patch correctly because the quicksave option works, but I can't figure out what's wrong with the fly spell for the dragon. Again, I've beaten this game twice already, so I know I'm doing the basic stuff correctly (using the right key, making sure I have the magic for it). Hmmm.

Two other things I've tried out. If I have the fly spell on outside, I'm unable to fly, jump, or use the jump spell. If I'm inside a dungeon with the spell on, I of course can't fly, but I can jump and use the jump spell again. If I let the fly spell wear off, I can jump and use the jump spell again.

So something about the dragon's flight spell causes me to hit an invisible ceiling while I'm outside. I haven't tried getting a hold of someone with the fly spell and seeing if it causes the same glitch that the dragon's flight spell does, but I imagine I'd have the same result.

If you have one, check an older savegame to see if the glitch is persistent in the savefile.

I did not have an earlier save file, but I did know how to get back to Garrotes Gorge and get the first dragon up to master level very quickly, so I spent the past half hour or so doing that. Unfortunately, it produced the same results with the flight spell.

I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game (while preserving my save files) and that was unsuccessful.

Another thing I've noticed about this glitch is that if I jump off a ledge or something and hit the page-up button to fly, I'll freeze in mid-air and the winged boots will do their animation for as long as I hold down on the button. But I can't go up or down, I only stay where I am until I let go of the button.

That's a weird issue ;-) Maybe it's connected to controls somehow. It could be that you're continuously descending or landing as if the Insert Key (descend) or the "Home Key" (land quickly) is pressed or your mouse wheel is scrolling down (an option Gray Face' Patch adds). Could there be anything on your system causing this? Any software fiddling with your keyboard or mouse or are there other input devices connected? You can also try switching the mouse wheel option of Gray Face' Patch by editing its ini file.

You figured it out! I don't know exactly what the issue is, but I started thinking about what you said about continuously descending/landing. I had tried changing the button to fly/ascend, but it was the descending that was the issue. Once I changed the descend key from insert to something else, flying worked fine.

It's just a guess, but I think the issue might be that while the wireless keyboard I typically use has an insert button, my laptop's built in keyboard does not, and maybe that was causing some kind of conflict. I can't say for sure.

Anyway, thank you for constantly responding to my comments for a very old and not too popular game, even though I've already beaten it a few times, I really love this series and wanted to run through mm8 again.
Great! Your welcome and thanks for the feedback.
