I had 700,000 gold tucked away neatly in the bank. I went to deposit more and the balance was zero. Thankfully I've got 200,000 falling out of my pockets that I'll never be able to spend, but I was hoping to get over a million before I finished the game just as a personal achievement.

Money is ridiculous in these games after awhile, lol.

But seriously??? If this was early game and I was trying to save up for spellbooks or skill ranks or something I'd be pretty...PO'd.

Replaying MM8, I feel like somehow I have discovered every bug possible. I don't remember this game messing with me so hard the first time through. Which was, admittedly, going on 25 years ago. Ah, the summer of 2000...what a time for gaming. Being a latchkey kid too young to legally get a job with parents who'd rather have you at home gaming than out causing trouble... *chef's kiss*

Base game through GOG, nothing modified.

Has this happened to anybody else?

Pirate attack on Ravenshore leads to bank being robbed. (If I remember correctly)
Is that what happened?
Yep, Regnan pirate attack was my first thought as well. The bank losing any deposited money when the Regnan's hit Ravenshore is a known thing, unlike whatever nonsense happened with your Dragon.

Whellllllllllllp, that's exactly when it happened. There really should be A) a fun way to get it back via a quest if you WTFPWN every pirate and go to Dread Pirate Stanley's cache or B) The banker should have have an option that's like, "Soz, bruh! Got robbed, bruh!!!111"

I guess maybe I feel better that it's not a bug.
I remember this happen to me on my first playthrough when I was like 8 years old, needless to say I was devastated lmao

It's definitely not a fun mechanic. I'm not saying you can't do stuff like that to mess with players, but it shouldn't have a "whomp-whomp..." feeling.
What's the benefit of putting money in the bank in mm8?

My understanding of why a player would deposit money in the bank is that the cost of recovery at temples from death or eradication is dependent on the money that you had on your person when it happens.

Given that I never allowed myself to die in such fashion without a recovery option I have never bothered to stick any money in a bank.

I think the other aspect is that if you have a banker NPC in the party then funds can accumulate. Not sure if that is party gold or gold in bank.

Again why bother to play a fantasy game and be concerned with mundane stuff.

Now if gold has an impact on carry capacity then it would be a consideration, but it does not.
you can die without losing anything, lets say you run into a dungeon loot some items from chests and then can't get out anymore you can just die and not lose your gold

If your entire party dies (eradicated, stoned, etc), then you respawn but all gold you're carrying is lost. Any money saved in the bank is still there after party death.

The bank is something of a holdover from earlier iterations of the game where the bank did provide interest on stored money. That was in MM4 and 5, I believe. I'm not sure about MM1-3.

No, temple prices are static when fixing the same problem at the same temple.

The cost depends on the area the temple is in (higher leveled areas cost more) and on the "difficulty" of service required (it costs more to heal a dead character than to remove poison, for example). Multiple services being provided at the same time will all apply their gold cost.

A banker npc applies a multiplier to any gold you loot, whether it be from monster corpses or from stacks of money found on the ground or in chests. Possibly from some quests, but I wouldn't swear to that.

Much like the Factor (same service, lower multiplier), they are effectively free after you pay their join fee.

It works that way in MM3. I once saw a speedrun where the player took advantage of this plus the gold to XP fountain to reach level 200. (Ended up at a lower level due to using Mr. Wizard a lot, however.)

MM2 has no banks, so I'd imagine MM1 doesn't, either.

(Note that the banks in MM3-MM6 are prone to overflow, but you don't need to worry about that until you get close to 2 billion in the bank.)

If you aren't worrying about "mundane stuff" and doing math, you aren't playing Might and Magic. It's playing you. XD
This doesn't sound as bad as MM2's penalty for stealing from Murray.
