The only thing I was successful at stealing was the quest item from that one dude in the pit. I kept trying to steal his raygun, and kept failing. Right now, I have stealing at Grandmaster with a +12 to skill item, and I can't seem to steal items from monsters (that I see have things with Telepathy). Keeps saying that my thief was caught stealing.

Is there something about Stealing that I don't get?

It's a known fact, that Stealing skill in this game is virtually useless.
1) I assume that you have your spy selected when you attempt to steal? It is just like disarming a trapped chest in that only the active character's skill level is checked.

2) I'm not sure the blaster guy is holding a ray gun that can be stolen.

3) Stronger monsters make the check harder, and more expensive stuff is harder to steal. I seem to recall that stealing from hostiles also makes the check harder (and maybe are impossible to steal from, if they are aware of you?).

Sadly, I don't have more information for you, and some of this might only apply to other games. Stealing is a mostly useless skill, so I don't even bother trying to use it except maybe to steal the lute on Emerald Isle.

That would explain what I was seeing, though I was somehow "caught stealing" even when invisible. Funny to see your reputation drop to "Unfriendly" in a dungeon tho.

"Son, we may be vile, murderous monsters down here, but we don't like thieves!"
