I've been playing through this game and doing well, for once, but I noticed a while ago no music is playing. I checked the in-game settings, and the music is supposed to be going full-blast. I did install the fan patch, but other than that, I have no idea what might be happening.
This question / problem has been solved by Azure_Fangimage
Installing the fanpatch is what caused it, but the fix is simple.

1) Go to your MM6 installation folder and open "MM6.ini". Look for "PlayMP3=" and change the 0 to 1. Save and close the file.
2) Still in the MM6 installation folder, create a new folder named "music".
3) Go to the folder "Sounds" and copy the 14 MP3 files. Leave "Audio.snd" alone.
4) Paste your copied MP3s into your new "music" folder.
5) Enjoy MM6 with music!
That did it! Thank you!
Hello, I'm not sure if anyone will answer me now in this 2 years old thread but I'm in this situation:

In game music worked just fine until some recent windows update (win 10). After that I can't get it working anyhow and what's more my mm6.ini didn't have any PlayMP3= in it at all. I tried to add it there but with no result. Game is still stubbornly musicless.. The music in MM6 is for me at least 50% of the total atmosphere which I love so I need to make it working. Any suggestions what else I could try?

I believe the PlayMP3 option is added by the "Grayface" MM6 patch (Which is easily found online). The vanilla game doesn't have that flag. The patch is more engine updates and occasional bug fixes then anything else. If you do install it be aware that reading through the entire change log is a good idea, as there's quite a few possible tweaks which may be of benefit. For example "MusicLoopsCount=0" should allow the music to loop endlessly. Additionally one may enjoy turning on "mouelook" for a more modern playing experience (Download his MM6 mouselook settings off his site if you want the WASD controls to go with).

Having said all that, I just checked and the game music works fine for me with the vanilla install on Windows 10. I then installed the latest Grayface MM6 patch and the music also worked without having to move around files to different folders as the fix above needed for the earlier version of the patch. The patch is still worth trying on your system as many of the engine updates are for compatibility reasons (Including an updated MP3DEC.ASI). If it still doesn't work after installing there may be something else causing your issues. Have you tried running MM6 with different compatibility mode settings already?

*Added Note:
The" MusicLoopCount" just reminded me of something. I was having issues on a previous install with the music not looping until I converted the mp3 files to wav files. I used a free program called "freac" to do it (Encoder should be "Windows Wave File Output" and filename pattern should be "<filename>"). I don't know if the vanilla install allows for the playing of wav files, but the Grayface patched version does for sure. However the wav files do need to be in the "Music" folder not "Sounds" and the flag "PlayMP3" still needs to be set to"1". If the patch alone doesn't work, then re-encoding those files should bypass the MP3 playing issue entirely!

How do you convert MP3 to WAV?

Windows Media Player seems willfully incapable and I tried VLC which also seems incompetent.

ShadowWulfe: How do you convert MP3 to WAV?

First create a "Music" Folder in the "Might and Magic 6" Install Folder. (Wav Files will not work from "Sounds")

Try fre:ac https://www.freac.org/

Now in the general settings do the following:

Make sure encoder is set to "Windows Wave FIle Output"

Make sure under the Output Filenames that the Filename Pattern is set to "<filename>"

Set the output folder to the GOG "Might and Magic 6\Music" folder you created earlier

Drag and drop all the numbered (2-16) MP3s found in the "Might and Magic 6\Sounds" folder into the main fre:ac window and press the play button to convert. (leave audio.snd alone)
Now ensure that the latest Grayface patch for MM6 is installed: https://grayface.github.io/mm/

Run the game, if you still don't have music ensure that in the MM6.ini the PlayMP3 flag is set to "1" (Which I believe is the default) (Also must run the game with the patch at least once for this and the other new options to appear)

You also may need to move the old music mp3s to a different folder, like "Might and Magic 6\Old Mp3s" for example. (Again leave audio.snd where it is)

And again if you want the music to endlessly loop then in the mm6.ini "MusicLoopsCount" should be set to "0"

You'll know it's working if you have music at the menu screen :)

Thanks, I am using the Merge mod and tried to make a Music folder with WAV files, however, the WAVs did not play at all.

The ini change should work?

Ah, you're using the Merged Mod. Yes the wav files should still work with the "PlayMP3=1", I run it myself that way.

However, your comment on making a Music folder worries me a bit. MM8 should have a Music folder by default not Sounds. (Grayface patch should also be MM8)

I have noticed in the past if I didn't follow the install instructions on the Merge Mod perfectly I could run into weird issues. Maybe there's an issue/corruption with your install?

Also I assume the converted wav files play in Windows Media player? (VLC is self contained, and so not a good test) Otherwise, something may be off in the Windows system itself.

Oh and finally, If you have a Antivirus installed make sure it's excluding the installed game folders. I've seen issues where an Antivirus program decides to be too "helpful" and removes things it shouldn't....

*Addendum - If you haven't already, set both "MM8Setup.Exe" and "mm8.exe" to Windows XP Sp2 compatibility mode. This will also allow you to use Hardware 3D mode through "MM8Setup.exe" and may solve other issues.

Sorry, I was not clear, I did not "make" the Music folder as it was already present. Any attempts to conver to the .wav yield no looping music however. I use the community patch for the Merge.

Oh That's good, had me worried for a bit!

You mentioned using the community fixes patch, have you also installed the Grayface 2.4.1 MM8 patch? I believe it may be required for the wav files to work.

The mp3 files should be moved out of the "Music" Folder

All the mp3 files (2-51) should have their wav conversions placed in the "Music" Folder

the mm8.ini should have been edited to the following (After running the game at least once, post Grayface patch):

PlayMP3=1
MusicLoopsCount=0
And as I mentioned previously: If you haven't already, set both "MM8Setup.Exe" and "mm8.exe" to Windows XP Sp2 compatibility mode. This will also allow you to use Hardware 3D mode (native widescreen support!) through "MM8Setup.exe" and may solve other issues.

I just tested this with a new install/build of Merge, Grayface 2.4.1 patch, the latest full community fixes, and the converted wav files. Started a game in Enroth and waited around to ensure the music looped. It did.

If you haven't installed the Grayface patch on your current install, it may be a good idea to create a new separate Merge Install so that your current game won't be impacted. And just copy over the save games to the new install once you've verified everything works as it should.

Hopefully this will help!
