(As the title says)
Well, there is the fact that you need Cartography to actually get the game to self-map, and if you erase that skill, the game will not map for you. (Sorcerers start with it.)

Also, note that there are class quests, most of which you won't have your Sorcerer with you, so you won't get the auto-map unless you taught the skill to someone else.

Furthermore, the auto-map doesn't show placed encounters or events. (Knowing where placed encounters are can be handy since it will let you Jump (S 2-4) over the encounters.

So yes, there are legitimate reasons you might want to make your own maps.

Side note: You might consider checking out Elminage Gothic, a Wizardry-style dungeon crawler whose automap requires using a consumable (or spell) to display. If you enjoy making your own map, you might find that aspect of the game fun.
Also remember that you need to face a certain direction to trigger many events. And every time you turn around there's is a chance of a random encounter.

The "Etrian Odyssey" games for DS/3DS also allow you to make your own maps, while by default the map automatically draws itself when you move, you can turn that feature off and just map it completely from scratch.

The Dark Spire (for the DS) has a setting that completely disables the automap, while still allowing you to get your coordinates by casting a 1st level Arcane spell (the one that normally shows your position on the automap).

I have played the DS Etrian Odyssey games, and I refuse to get a 3DS because of DRM and region-locking, so those games are not options for me.

Edit: Etrian Odyssey 3, late in the game, has areas where the map doesn't even show your position. I actually got lost once (but fortunately, I had the item that lets you warp out of the dungeon). Of the DS EO games, my ranking is 3 > 1 > 2. (EO2 has serious balance issues that make the game less fun.)

Still, I love the dedication to old-school dungeon crawlers :)
No, it's not weird, I also continued to draw my own maps for MM2. There are lots of details that aren't noted down in the automaps. Also I was an idiot and didn't realize I could look at the automap at any time, I thought I had to cast Location to see it. Besides, making maps by hand is fun!

I was doing this, but I noticed, that for some reason, drawing town maps in 2 takes a lot more out of me than maps in 1, maybe it's because the towns are more detailed? Regardless, I could map out all of Portsmith in about maybe a hour. It took me I swear half a day to map out Middlegate. Then again I may have gotten rusty between games.
Also, the in-game mapping is very useful to help with my digital mapping. (I open a 16x16 grid table in word)

I use the in-game one to help if I messed up :) very useful
I also drawn all maps into my notebook for MM2 because the automap ingame is really just a rudimentary thing, which was basically only useful to me for telling me where I've already been and where I haven't yet. Without marking important places it is useless so I can't imagine beating the game with ingame maps only.
