Hope this isn't too dumb. I'm excited to play MM1. I love the might in magic series 6, but MM1 looks different, but in a good way. I love make-your-own map games (I've beaten Dark Spire, making my own map all the way through). But I have a question. Where do I "start" with mapping? The manual says the floors are all 16x16 square, but is there a spell or a way to tell where you are to begin with? (A,1) etc... I don't want to start a map and go off a page! That's the only thing keeping me from starting to play. Thank you!

I'm kinda in the same boat.
Just started playing MM1 for the first time and so far i managed to map most of the first town.
I'm not seeing any lv1 cleric or sorceror spells to help with mapping. Maybe there are higher level spels to do what you mentioned, but i haven't looked into them yet to be honest.
There are maps on the cluebooks and it's relatively easy to spot where you start but that kinda spoils the fun and i'm not using them.
So i'm using custom paper with 32x32 squares and i started mapping at the center of the paper. That way i have enough room in all directions even if the starting place happens to be on a map's edge and so far it's working pretty good. Once you have most of the place mapped out figuring out the x,y coordinates it's easy.
Maybe there's an easyer way to do things, i dunno.
Edit: Scrap that.
I was flat out wrong. I just started looking to the spells in more detail and actually there's a lv1 sorceror spell that gives you all the required information for an easyer mapping. It's spell #7 - Location and now i really wish i had looked at the spells descriptions with more attention before starting my mapping.
I just tried it and It tells you the Map sector you're in, X,Y coordinates, dirction you're facing, etc, etc, so there you go.

Be careful the numbers go from 0 to 15. That messed my first map up.

Thank you both for all your help :). I use this grid paper I bought at the office store. It has this yellow aged look I like.
With most of the older games here on GoG, reading the manual thoroughly saves you TONS of grief.

Yes, very much so. In that era, it was expected that all players would read the manual first.

Regarding mapping, be sure to cast Location often. There are some maps with tricky traps that will teleport the party around or otherwise disorient the player, so keeping track of where the party is is critical. Mapping the areas is as much a challenge as battling the monsters in the first two MM games.

What's the best spell to use against the undead in MM1?

Turn Undead, probably. I don't remember what level that is, though. You might need to level up your cleric a bit before you'll get access to it.

Always have every protective spell on. They will last until the next time you rest and they really make a difference in the beginning.

No need to level up. Turn Undead is one of the level 1 spells (1-7 if I remember correctly).

And yes, to cast the combination of Protection Against Elements, Protection Against Magic and Stone Skin every day is indeed a very good idea.

...aaaaand now I get the joke. I am not sure why I didn't notice how old this thread was. I could have sworn it had shown up as new on my screen. Oh well.

Well played, by the way.

EDIT: My reading comprehension fails again... looks like it was DavitosanX's recent post that led me to believe the thread was newer than it was.
