I just tested the installer for Mok's patch today and it refused to run on Windows 7 with no admin privileges.

I'm not in the habit of giving programs admin privileges except if they really need it - and I'm 100% certain there is no need for an MM6/7/8 patch to have admin privileges.

Can the patch be run on a restricted UNIX environment or DosBox?

It might need admin rights, because the game had to be installed with admin rights and the common user probably has no rights to alter or overwrite certain files of the game. You could try to edit the game's installation folder's access rights, so that your current user has full access (right-click the folder => Properties => Security).
I got it working with no admin privileges required. The admin privilege request is due to a (monumentally retarded) and little-known Windows Vista/7 feature called "Installer Detection". You can find instructions on how to disable it by searching

"windows 7 how to disable installer detection" in Google and clicking on the link to superuser.com
(FYI superuser.com is a website where people can ask for help with computer technology, both hardware and software questions as far as I know)

In a nutshell, Installer Detection scans a file's properties for certain terms and if it finds them, it requires admin privileges to run the program no matter if the program actually needs them. There is no way to disable it in Windows 7 Home Premium short of editing the system registry.
Thanks for the feedback. Haven't thought of that as my main gaming rig for good old games still runs Win XP. Spares me some troubles.
