it has always been my belief that entering the inn interface saved the game in mm2

Should be explained in the manual.
You can't save your game in a traditional sense, but you save your character's progress by entering one of the Inns. Where you also start the game. There is no other way of saving, so be careful to get to an inn every now and then to not lose too much progress.
The same system applies to Might and Magic 1 by the way. :)
