Try gathering all your gems on one character then trading, it worked for me when it was happening to my Sorcerer.
I just lost a few hundred gems becouse of this bug!!!! I'm almost broke!

Do you mean gathering and then distributing between members? (archer, sorcerer, cleric). It happened to all of them (not all the time, i traded like 50 gems at a time, it was good, but I reached 200 on my cleric and then poof: zero).

BTW any tips for gem hunting? I need to get the numbers up ASAP becouse now i'm stuck, without gems i'm powerless.

EDIT: Just noticed this in another topic, in case anyone had the problem, if it's true then the thing is solved:

"yes testing confirmed that weird overflow happens when trading only. Finding gems in the wild works ok.
Trading is strange. When giving gems to someone with less than 255, it overflows if it reaches 255. When giving gems to someone who is already above 255, everything seems ok. But... if you give over 255 gems, he the receiver gets only the "overflowed" amount (mod 255)..."

Indeed the bug is there. The only way around it that I found is to trade gems carefully, keeping the above in mind.

That said, I've never had problems with not having enough gems. You should usually get more gems from monsters than you could spend.

Well due to the bug I lost almost all my gems (could be more than a thousand) and that was the time I was using the highest level spells very frequently and I was playing in the higher level areas (castle doom for example). so lack of gems was painful for quite a while. Apparently you get rewarded with gems more for grinding lower level monsters than winning difficult battles, becouse when I started exploring the lower level areas suddenly the gem levels skyrocketed (and also I could save some on costly spells).
I use the SHARE command now. No more lost gems.
For what it's worth, you don't actually lose the gems. After the bug makes them seemingly disappear, if you gather them all to a single character, you'll find that you still have your original total.
I can't speak English well but I found this. (TRADE command option)

1. Knight, Paladin, Archer, Robber, Sorcerer - Max gems 511. (if +1 add to max gems, then it remains 256 gems down)

2. Cleric - Max gems 1023. (if +1 add to max gems, then it remains 768 gems down)
