Hello,

I just completed MM6 for the I-don't-know-how-many'th time and, as always, I loved playing through this game.
Some of the things that always get me back to play this specific game, are the sounds and the music, aided by nostalgia.

Back in the days when these games were first released, I tried to play MM7 after having completed MM6. But every time I start, I can only get myself through one hour of gameplay before I get fed up with the annoying character voices. I find that the voices are way to exaggerated and there are too many bad (and unnecessary) jokes in there as well (eg. "just a scratch"/"is that supposed to hurt?") EVERY TIME they get hit.
So after the intro quest line, I either end up starting over in MM6 instead, or stop playing at all.

I am certain that I would play through the game if the sounds were descent.

Does anyone know if it's in any way possible to replace the voices in MM7 (eg. with those of MM6)? I do not want to use an "alternative voice" from MM7, since I find all of them annoying. Googling the topic did not give me any answers.

Yes, it is possible to do this. It's not really complicated, depending how tech savvy you are.

(before you start anything remember to back up any import data first, in case anything goes wrong).

The game data is located in the .lod files, located in DATA folder

You need to extract the data from these files. There is a tool called AutoLod created be Sergey Rozhenko, the author of the famous GrayFace patch.

His page also lists 2 other tools Lod Compare and Lod Merge which might come in handy

Either way, after unpacking those lod files, you want to look for the wav files that contain the sounds. After that replace them with any wav files you want. You can extract wav files from MM6 and replace them with those. Repack those files back to lod and Bob's your uncle.

Hi ZFR,

Thanks a lot for your reply! I didn't expect that it would be possible, since I have not been able to find anything about it before, so I am very excited about this.

I already got the AutoLod program, unpacked the sound files, and started replacing them.
I am not finished yet, since it will probably take some time to go through (so far I've only replaced only half of the whiny elf female's voice files)

Do you, by chance, know how to repack them as well? I realize that it's not your application, but in case you know, you could potentially save me a lot of trouble.

I haven't used these but I found something else:

Look at the first program MMArchive. Download it. It lets you pack and upack lod and snd archives.

So basically after you finish replacing all the .wav files
_Open MMArchive
_Click File then New
_Call the new file something like modified.snd (note that .wav files are saved in audio.snd and not in a lod file)
_Drag all the modified files to the window on the right.
_Close MMArchive. The modified.snd should be saved automatically.

You'll now have the original audio.snd and the modified.snd you just created. So simply make a backup copy of the original and rename your modified.snd to audio.snd to use it.

Also note that on the page I linked above MMArchive is packed in .7z format. To open it, you'll need to download 7zip. Google for it if you don't use it already.

Le me know if it works.
Thanks a lot!

I will look into it.
I can already tell that it's going to take me a long time to get done.

I'll let you know how it goes.
Take that back or I'll crush you.
How can you not like the voices, besides the squeaky elf.

Indeed :) I liked the goblin's voice "Just you and me now *wink*" when other 3 party members end up dead.

Well to me the MM7 voices feel like a sitcom version of the MM6 ones - and I hate sitcoms.
Each their own I suppose
