So it sounds like Konami did just enough work to get them working on modern machines, but left a bunch of old issues alone. Are the fan patches vital to a good experience, or is it perfectly fine without?

Actually, the best way to play these games is on PSOne and PlayStation 2. The best versions. However, if you just have a PC and the old consoles are nowhere to be seen around you, these are really fine ports. Nothing as bad as some players here seem to think.

There are old PC ports so they need some twinkling and patience while configuring settings, but hey, every old PC game here needs that. So there is no difference between GOG's treatment for MGS and for example Anachronox.
I hope I'm not going off-topic, but I'd also like to know WHICH fan patches are essential. Can anyone point me in any direction? :c

for MGS2 V's fix is the fit https://github.com/VFansss/mgs2-v-s-fix/wiki

MGS1 I hear 'Metal Gear Solid 1 Integral PC [1080p/Xinput Controller Support/DX10.1] is good but I'm not sure if I should post anything other than it exist
Metal Gear Solid (no, there's not a 1 at the end), it seems to run fine here. I've got through 3/4 of the game already with no issues. Keyboard controls work great. Got them mapped between WASD and the arrow keys. Much better than the controller.

Is there an option to bind the keys in the default game or is that only present in the fix. I looked through the options on the main menu before the game loads, however I was unable to find any setting for that.

Edit: Found it. There's a configuration .exe file in the /bin folder of the root game directory. It's titled MGS2SConfig. To edit Key Bindings, go to the tab at the top right corner titled "Keys".

I haven't looked into MGS2 yet but the first game definitely has an easy to use option. I did it on the main menu and changed some again in game in options.

Never tried the PC port of 1, but the fan patch for 2 makes a huge difference and fixes/improves a ton of things.

It would be nice if they released updates for the two MGS games to incorporate the community patches like Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines.

ACTUALLY the best way to play MGS2 is on an Xbox One X.

If you're looking to play a version of a substandard port of the original, then that's definitely the way.

If you're looking to play the game as it was made, however, you need a PS2.
The Vita HD ports of MGS 2 and 3 are also amazing ;)

It is indeed a bit sketchy and unpleasant, but I'm sure GOG was limited in how much they could play with the files. Thanks to unpaid fans, and not Konami, I get to play MGS in 16:9 and MGS2 in 21:9.

Why take pride in your product when others can fix it for free? AKA the Bethesda approach.

How was the controller? That's what I almost always play with.
I just tried to run Substance with the VFansss MSG fix on my retail version. The game would not start after applying it. It would stay on the logo screen where it says to press start. When I hit the start key it would go to the normal screen where you choose new game or load game etc. The after choosing new game, I would be taken back to the logo screen from where I started. Over and over. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, if anything. But the game will not start with this fix (retail version).

I had to uninstall and reinstall the game from my discs to get it to run again. Now, without VFansss fix it runs without a problem. Just odd.
