By default, GOG’s Windows release of MDK is configured with compatibility settings on the executables that causes a UAC box to pop up when launching the game asking for Administrator privileges to run. Despite this, I have determined that the game does not require Admin privileges if installed in the default directory of C:/GOG Games/MDK.

To remove the admin prompt, simply go to the main executables, right click them, and choose Properties. On the Compatibility tab, uncheck Run as administrator, and if necessary change it for all users. This should apply to MDK.EXE, MDK_soft.exe, and MDK3DFX.EXE.

Also, for some reason, Galaxy defaults to installing games in C:/Program Files (x86)/GOG Galaxy/Games. I highly recommended changing this to C:/GOG Games to avoid issues, which can be done in Galaxy’s settings.

Now you can appreciate the game’s icon without a huge shield blocking it. I also recommended grabbing the original desktop icon, either from GOG’s Mac .dmg or from PCGamingWiki (which I uploaded as well as created higher quality versions of, shameless self-promotion).
