I pretty much joined GoG.com just hoping for MoO/MoO2/MoM to come here, and I'm overjoyed to see them. However, I'm having problems with getting MoO2 to run the way I want it to. No matter what I select as the scaler in the .conf file, the window always stays very small - I run with normal3x in MoO1 and MoM, and that's about perfect.
Why doesn't MoO2 adjust window size the same way, and is there some way to get a larger (but still windowed) display? I'm guessing that it's something to do with MoO2 having higher native resolution than MoO1 and MoM, but I'm still confused as to why the scaler setting seems to have no effect.

You are totally correct- it's the higher native resolution.
MOO2 with a scale factor of 2x should run at 1280x960, and demands 1920x1200 (the math on this one doesn't seem right, but that is what the output reported...) for a scale factor of 3x. If your monitor cannot reach those resolutions, the scaler will fail.
You can append "forced" to the scaler line, however, to experiment. It looks like this:
scaler=hq2x forced
Run it in windowed mode at first when you do, that way you can see the real size of the image to get an idea.

Hmm, strange. I'm at 1680x1050, so I should be good with a 2x scaler, which would fill my monitor mostly up. When I choose a 2x scaler, though, I still get a tiny window in the corner of my screen, as if it's not scaling at all. I'll try forcing the issue as you suggest. . .
Yep, it worked. Larger than the 3x scaler I use for MoO1 and MoM, but still small enough to display the entire window on my screen. I wonder why I had to use the "forced" option to get it to work?
Well, anyway, thank you very much! Off to conquer the galaxy!
when i select multiplayer network on moo2 and setup a game my brother ,nor I can join the game because of an error , we have win xp svc pak 3 and ipx, and tcpip protocalls installed on our system.

not sure what is wrong, but pretty sure it has nothing to do with this topic
Where do I even go to make this change? A click by click walk through would rock!

Really glad I found this, helped a lot, thanks Xenobrain.

All right, I had this same problem but "forced" made it work!

You have to find the dosboxMOO2.conf file. On my computer it was in this directory: Program Files(x86)/GOG.com/Master of Orion 1 and 2/Master of Orion 2. (It might be in Program Files/etc. on someone else's computer.) Look in the file and edit the options. You might have to change the output option as well...go here for more information http://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Dosbox.conf
I have downloaded m00 and moo2 and cannot run moo2 due to a dos box issue. The game wont even load. I have done so on this computer before my neww hard drive. Why would moo run but not moo2?
I have the same problem as Sterling. Game runs fine on Win 7, doesn't launch on XP due to a Dosbox crash on startup. Tried the fix above and it works: replace the scaler line in the dosbox conf file to scaler=hq2x forced and your good to go. The music stutters, but launches fine.
