Well, I tried to send a support ticket about this but haven't received a reply in several days so hopefully someone can help me here.

Anyway, when I get into MoO1 and start up a game, it's always very slow to respond to clicking with the mouse. Even doing things like dragging the screen across to other stars/planets is very unresponsive and often it doesn't even go in the direction I want it to go because it's so sluggish. This makes the game pretty much unplayable and a very unpleasant experience...

If anyone has had a similar issue or perhaps a solution then please do not hesitate to respond.

You can try increasing the game cycles (ctr + F12 I think) - Avogadro6 also reported in this thread:

http://www.gog.com/forum/master_of_orion_series/screen_resolution_and_game_speed

to change to DDraw+fullscreen+maintain aspect ratio in the setup program to speed up the game

DDraw was necessary just to make fullscreen mode work properly, it doesn't appear to have any significant effect on performance, if at all. Increasing cycles is all needed in this case, someone more tech savvy than me would just set up dosbox to use maximum cycles as to not doing it manually every time, but I don't know how to.

Ah yes, I see. The person had two problems. I was thinking it was an odd solution for speed issues. :)

DOSBox cycles can be altered by the config file for the game. If the user has his own DOSBox setup you can often setup a master config. GOG has all the games individually wrapped so it is the equivalent of doing it manually. Some games also *might* go too fast if the cycles are set to max, but I'm not sure if I've ever encountered that. I think there's an auto setting, but my memory fades since it has been awhile since I looked at it.
