The new MOO overwrites the old MOO1 shortcut that comes bundled with the gog.com version of MOO1 and 2. Please fix this if you can! (rename one of them)

They did fix it, but you'll have to download MoO1 again. It's now called "Master of Orion classic" and it installs into "...\Master of Orion 1". It changes the shortcut name as well, so MoO1 and NewMoO can coexist on your desktop.

I just reinstalled both of them. Saved games from MoO1 are files ending in .sav, so you can copy them, saved games (and settings) for the new one are in a different folder altogether.
But if you can't be bothered then just reinstall MoO1.
