In the appendix to the manual, it appears that if you take 9 books of one kind of magic, you get to pick one rare and one very rare skill that is guaranteed to eventually show up.

In-game, this does not seem to occur. Instead, I get the choice of common spells (a lot less interesting, since I was assured of getting all the common spells eventually, with 9 books.)

Is this a change that occurred during some patch? And, if so, is there someplace to go for the details? It seems to me that a major strategic choice has been changed, so documentation would save a lot of time.
Yes this was a changed made quite a long time ago sadly the manual never got updated.

Now you get common spells equal to # of spell books minus 1. Thus 3 Books get you 2 common spells from that school of magic of your choice.

However if you start with ALL picks in 1 spell school, that is 11 books, you get all the common spells, 2 Uncommon and 1 Rare.

Sadly 10 books still only gets you 9 of the common spells lol.

Check out my thread Spell Book Cost Discounts as well for some info on the bonus's for having a certain number of spell books in a school.

Thanks!

Played this game like crazy the for a couple years after it came out, but had not looked at it for a very long time. Age of Wonders 3 got me thinking about it again so I pulled it out. Amazing how much I've forgotten, but it sure holds me better than AOW3. :)

Yea so many games out there now just don't have the thought put into them that MoM did. All they care about nowadays are graphics and effects over actual game play.

Perhaps the reason is though that back then graphics offered so little that they had to find other ways to get people interested, however with games like Heroes 2 and 3 they hit out of the park with both.
