I just ran into one of my opponents capitol which happens to be halflings.

His Capitol has a max pop of 22, With Farmers Market but no Granary or Foresters Guild. Currently has 20 Population w/halflings no spells going on it. He also seems to have only made 1 Settler so far.

1 Nature Node
5 Forests
5 Plains
1 Desert
9 Shore

My Town Max pop 22 with Granary, Foresters and Farmer Market with current pop of 11 using Barbarians (who have +20 pop growth more than Halflings). No settlers created and got Granary asap followed be the Farm Market.

6 Forests
4 Mountain (1 w/mithril)
3 River
3 Plains
3 Shore
1 River Mouth
1 Hills

He also managed to have a Cathedral (replaced Shrine/Temple), Ship Wrights Guild, Sawmill, Library and Barracks. Wizard stats are Archmage and Divine Power with 5 Sorcery & Nature Books and 2 Life Books. Currently has 4 Heroes (Bard, Dwarf, Huntress and Healer) no fame ans somehow still manages to have 1100 Gold. He has 9 Sprites Guarding his Capitol as well and his mana pool is empty for the moment.

He also has at least 4 Shaman, 1 Swordsman and a Bowman. Has a Elven Lord Mercenary as well.

He also managed to research Dispel Evil as well. I think that's the highest spell he has.

My Buildings so far are Granary, Market Place, Farmers Market, Sawmill, Foresters Guild, Library, Shrine, Sages Guild and am 3 turns from Alchemists Guild. I have not created any troops yet either.

I really wonder how much the computer gets to cheat on Impossible in every sphere. I mean they seem to have twice the normal population growth combined with producing Housing without this slowing down building. Also they never seem to have to pay summon upkeep along with super fast and cheap casting. It seems they get all their mana in each of the 3 bars (mana, research and skill) without having to decide which they need to build more.

So anyone know further ways computer gets to cheat?

According to the official guide, enemy wizards receive the following benefits on Impossible:

1) Their city populations grow at triple what you're capable of. Presumably a similar bonus applies to settlements.

2) Production goes to 2.5x what you'd get, and their normal unit upkeep costs* are cut in half.

3) They start with 15 spell picks, vs. 11 for the human player. At least one wizard will choose Myrran.

4) They're born paranoid, with a built-in 50% penalty to diplomacy, and no reservations about dogpiling on the new guy (which would of course be you).

These numbers are for the vanilla version; throw in Insecticide and things get downright crazy.

*The upkeep bonus probably applies to summoned creatures as well; anecdotal evidence would indicate that mana costs for summoned creatures may be anywhere from half down to possibly zero.

I would say it goes down to 0.

I wonder how they magically get mana without seeming to lose any gold right away whenever they need it.

I would also say that their income is increased by 2.5x or more as well.

That triple production explains a lot as well.

Maybe they cheat when it comes to alchemy; perhaps they fine-tune the tax rate every turn to maximize production and profit; heck, it's even possible they conscript some of their own townsfolk in order to replenish their armies and build so many settlers. Point is, they do all that and it's still possible for the player to win. So I say, bring it.
I decided to only play on Normal. I don't care if it's "easier," I'd rather not have the computer players follow different rules. You can beat them anyway, because they're dumb and predictable. It doesn't matter how many advantages they have.
Then Sss'ra casts heroism on his slingers, and you remake the game.
Apparently the AI in this game isn't exactly top notch so they need all the help they can get!

The cure is worse than the disease, in this case.

Gee I never considered a computer which can only think 0 and 1 to be cheating if it had some advantages on impossible level, thats why it is called impossible, the compute starts with more resources and at a higher level
that's why it is called impossible.
Just think of it as a neighboring nation with more of everything that you have to outsmart.Or conversely just play on normal or introductory, they not only do not cheat but in the latter, they let you cheat.

Yeah it's the 90's, AI definitely not it's biggest strength. However using the measurements of the day it is right up there with the best of them, especially when you first play it without any outside guidance or prior knowledge.
