Does anyone know of a patch or update for master of magic that will render a higher resolution?

I love this game but the graphics look so terrible on my large monitor that it is uncomfortable to play.

An HD version of the game would be really cool.
There aren't any AFAIK, although I don't really use mods.

You can improve the look a little bit by editing the dosboxMoM.conf file. Change "scaler=none" to "scaler=hq2x" or "scaler=hq3x". Running the game in a window will also help a bit since it won't seem as pixellated. "fullscreen=false" will set it to run windowed by default. "output=ddraw" won't change the visual quality but may improve performance a bit.

Thanks! I will give it a try.
The scalers aren't a really good option, but they are the best available. The game was pretty ugly even when it was first released, and standards were much lower then.

As I understand it, the graphics of the game are hard coded in a way that makes them very difficult to modify.
That's a bummer, I was just reading the wiki and noticed that the icons for the game all look pretty solid in hd. They're hardly hd sprites or anything, they just look way nicer when they're not squashed to tiny dos res.

Does anyone know if this has been attempted in the past and isn't possible due to hardcoded limits?

Thanks I had this issue too,
I couldn't find the config file to make adjustments, and its nicely labeled in there.
Its at C:\GOG Games\Master of Magic\dosboxMOM.conf If you had trouble finding it like I did.

"scaler=hq3x" works well for me. I was constantly having to Alt+Enter to scale down then can do something else, then select and Alt+Enter to go back to full screen. It was a pain.

You can change "windowresolution=original" to "windowresolution=1024x768" or any other resolution you like. This will make the window much bigger.
I am hoping Worlds of Magic will be as good as MOM (even close) and will look good.
