Hello, I've ran into troubling glitch, sometimes during the game I find that I am unable to cast spells. Has anyone else run into this problem. When I was playing the none gog version with Dosbox the one and only solution that I found was disabling the XMS memory, maybe that should be defaulted in the GOG version.

Anyway, have any of you encountered this issue?
I'm not sure that it's the same issue that you're experiencing, but I do seem to recall having an issue with casting spells when there were a large number of other objects - townspeople, for example - on the level. In those cases I think that getting rid of some of the extra objects (e.g. killing off townspeople) helped, as long as you caught it early enough that you had some form of usable attack.

It's an issue that's always been there. As Thaumaturge stated it's caused by too many objects and will mostly occur on levels with a high bystander population. Apparently changing the game's output to "opengl" solves the issue. Just open the "graphic mode setup" in the start menu to set this rather easily.

Thanks buddy.
I have this issue too. I tried running the Graphic Mode Setup application but it just says "Error: Game not installed". The game works so it is obviously installed... I removed and reinstalled it, ran graphic mode setup again but it still says the game is not installed. I also tried changing "output" in dosboxmc.conf to opengl but this made no difference, the game still won't generate spells (or generates them very sporadically) when I am on a level with large numbers of objects. Any help would be appreciated, I already played all the way through this game using cheat codes to remove some of the extra civilians in the game but obviously I would prefer not to have to overcome the issue in this manner...

have you tried running it from the start menu? somehow changes in the display settings just work when you start the setup from your start-menu not from the the folder itself

EDIT:

but this didnt help for me. still cant cast any spell on this level. when i restart it its the same. first i can cast, later i cant... no matter if i choose opengl, surface, direct3D whatever. always the same...
im pretty sure it has something to do with the population (when its growing to much) it grows huge at this level but how can i avert this?? I hope there is a solution cos its unplayable like this :-(

Sorry to bring this up, but I found on an internet forum something that might solve it, so give it a try.

open the dosbox config file and change
memsize=16
to
memsize = 64.

Seems to work for me, though I haven't tested it a lot.
Nope, the solution above doesn't work on level 35, where zillions of archers are spawned pretty fast.

I put memsize = 1024 but still the bug appears after some time.

The problem is that on this level it's almost impossible to control the archer population.

The game is unplayable, is there any solution to this?

I have this problem as well on level 14.

I managed to solve it. See this post:
https://www.gog.com/forum/magic_carpet_series/cant_pass_level_35/post2

Basically on the levels in which it happens (usually there are 2 of them), you have to play on low res mode and lower DOSBox cycles to make it playable. See the post in the above link for details.

Alternatively you have to kill the humans really fast before they populate the map.

How did you get past level 14? It's impossible!

Did you do as I described in my post above? Play it on low res and lower DOSBox cycles?

I will try that! Have it on 70000 cycles now, how many cycles should i set it on?

Thanks!

It really depends on your machine and the speed you're comfortable with. If you can play with 70k cycles on low res, then leave it there. If the game is too fast, lower the cycles till it becomes playable.

EDIT:
As a side notice, I suspect this is the reason the bug was never widely reported back in the day. Very few machines could run the game in high res mode.

Will try that thanks! I fear for level 35 but i am not there yet.

I believe so too! It was way ahead of it's time.
