///Steam and original disc versions///

1. First, install Mafia from your disc or go to the directory where you installed your Steam version of the game and download the MafiaDataXtractor from here: https://mafiamods.com/mods/mafia-data-xtractor-modding-tool/

2. Next, extract the DataXtractor and copy MafiaDataXtractor.exe to the root of Mafia directory where Game.exe is located (Ex. C:\ProgramFiles\Mafia\ or C:\ProgramFiles\Steam\steamapps\Mafia\)

3. Launch MafiaDataXtractor.exe and select ab.dta - Music from the list. Wait for the program to extract .ogg's

4. Now that extracting is done, you should see a new folder called 'SOUNDS'. Copy the whole thing to where you installed the GoG version of Mafia. Windows will ask if you would like to replace the existing files, say 'Yes'.

All done!

Absolutely. Playing Mafia without all the period music would be utterly stupid.

Rockstar did the same thing with the digital releases of Vice City, etc.

I have Mafia on disc and it is easily one of the best games ever made.

I hope you have backed up your solution files in lots of places and that you distribute them widely, for if/when the copyright cartel trolls come knocking.

To play Mafia without it's original music would be an atrocity. I mean that literally. All of the music in Mafia is absolutely essential to the player's experience.

The data extractor also appears on ModDB if you don't want to sign up for that site, I don't know if its too outdated though

Well, this is a bit strange. I was about to use the Xtractor and extract the ab.dta file, but it looked like there wasn't any at all in the list.

Then I noticed a "sounds" folder was already created in my game folder. O_o
Did it maybe come already pre-extracted with the installed GoG version?

OP is a bit confusing, but mostly right. From what I understand you must execute steps 1 to 3 on the retail version, not on GOG's.

GOG's version doesn't have that file anymore, instead it loads the music from the SOUNDS folder.
