Title screen says 'controller recommended' but in-game, only WASD and mouse seem supported, any one else got this?
(running on Linux, XBOX rip-off controller, that does work with other games)

Same situation for me. I'm using a Logitech controller on Ubuntu 18.04 and it usually works. I thought it was pretty standard fare.

Now wondering what controller yields maximum compatibility.

If it is of any help: I also use Ubuntu 18.04 and my controller (EasySMX PC Gamepad with XBOX-Config) is recognized. Unfortunately it does not work correctly since the protagonist always runs to the right.
Support notified me that at least my version of Ubuntu (19.xx) is not supported. They adjusted the game details accordingly, but onfortunately this doesn't really help me ;)

Yeah, as much as using the latest bleeding edge stuff is cool, unless you want to do a lot of custom fixes on your environment (which is fine if you have the time, I don't), its usually better to stick with long term releases (and honestly, even for those, there is a significant stability difference a mere 6 months after the release if you wait that long).

I wouldn't expect them to support non-LTSes, the logistics would be too crazy.
Controller seems to mostly be working for me. Try plugging it in *after* starting the game instead of before. Only thing I can't get working is changing form. Menu pops up and then it always ends up on "fairy" half a second later without any chance to do otherwise.

I ran into a similar problem also.

I can usually get the controller to respond by pluging it back it, but changing forms occasionally works, but most times doesn't.

At this point, I'll sample the occasional patch to see if they fixed it, but otherwise, I won't bother. Too many other quality games that are more stable...

Works on 19.10 by installing (outdated) libcrypto.so.1.0.0 and libssl1.0.0 to /usr/lib

We can understand, that the game would work in a future update of Ubuntu?

Better to make a lib directory with the game, unpack those files there and run the game with LD_LIBRARY_PATH set appropriately.
Solus user here. Same issue as OP, where (XBOX 360 Wireless) just fails to register input.
Currently I simply use the windows version under wine and works perfectly. Hate it when wine works better than native...

Ubuntu 19.10 here. Simply installing using WINE doesn't help either :/

Any specific steps you took?
This is one of three games I recently acquired that have broken controller support on Linux. This one just crashes with my
dualshock 4 plugged in, and ignores it completely if I use xboxdrv to replace it with an xbox-like controller. Looking at the startup messages, I will try one other thing tonight, but basically this game is garbage without a controller. Mouse+keyboard rarely works worth a damn with a laptop/touchpad.

edit: my idea of filtering the input devices to only the controller only succeeded in getting the game not to segfault with my controller plugged in. I guess YoYo Games is to blame for this garbage, and I will probably never get it to work. Oh well, at least it was free. Just a colossal waste of time.
