I just bought this game today to give it a try since a lot of people have raved about this series to me, and much to my disappointment I find that after installation I am unable to actually play the game. All I seem to get is a black screen with sound in the background. Is there any chance a kind soul can help me out with this so I can see what everyone has been talking about?

My settings are as follows.

Windows 7 64bit Ultimate

AMD Phenom (tm) II x4 965 Processor 3.40GHz

16GB DDR3 Ram

Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 Graphics card

Is this a joke? You bought Magna Cum Laude because other people raved to you about how good the LSL series is? Yet you didn't know that Magna Cum Laude is generally considered the black sheep and bastard offspring of the series, one of two games that LSL fans usually try to avoid?

When they are 'raving' they are referring to the first seven games. Not the later 3D ones.

However, I'm sorry, I don't know how to help you though. :(

erm I bought the entire series not just that one. However this current game is the only one I am having issues with. Not even installed the others yet.

On topic, could you help me with my current dilemma please?
*shrug* nevermind then.....

Looks like I have solved my own problem. I had to right click the launcher exe, go into properties, then go into compatibility and tick the "Disable desktop composition" box, hit apply and then OK. Once I did that I launched the game and away I go.

Ps, Shame I cannot tick my own post as the solution but hey ho. :P

Glad you were able to get it to work! I would have tried to help you but its one of the few games I don't own, and I will probably pick it up at some point just to see how 'bad it is', and so I can work on articles about it for the LSL wiki.

Also good that you got the whole series. It's not my favorite Sierra series, but its at least a good example of the quality and original ideas that Sierra came up with during their golden age.

So basically doing that, or turning of Aero would solve our problems.

The really weird thing is my retail version of the game worked just fine on my old computer and that was also running Windows 7, so something got broken in the move to GoG for whatever reason.
Well I ultimately end up picking it up. I didn't have any problems with it running on my machine. It installed and ran just fine. But its possible they may have updated the installer?

Ya, while I think the game is 'entertaining' to an extent... The setting and all the little injokes back to previous games in the series are nice.

However, the mini-game presentation leaves too much to be desired.... The mini games really suck, and make later half of the game very tedious... Particulary the fact that its very difficult to get the timing correctly on just a keyboard. Some of the dialogue is entertaining, but the game is definitely more risqué than any previous Larry game ever got. More direct, and less use of innuendo...

I think it was 'worth it' for $6. But I feel sorry for anyone who paid full price back in the day.
I still have this issue when running it on Win 7 64bit, even after ticking the "Disable desktop composition" box.

Edit: Had to untick the "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" to get it working. Problem solved.
