Someone is always wondering, so:
GOG's version works out of the box with WINE 2.22 and supports direct Input as well.
If your game-pad is doubly recognized, open the terminal, enter "wine control joy.cpl" and disable the extra event usually looking like that: "Gamepadname"(js)

No, don't do that. Just disable the extra device (js vs event) via wine control joy.cpl. FYI, that window doesn't always refresh correctly until it's closed & reopened.

Cheers. Also, I think you want 'and disable the extra device'. Particularly as you are using the event device in this case. ;)
