I'm having difficulty launching the original game. Whenever I try it comes up with a Fatal Error message that reads:

"Failed to create d3d device. Application will now exit. Error = 0x8876086c"

Some fishing around has told me this isn't an uncommon problem with this game and people who tend to have more recent hardware like myself just don't seem to agree with it. It's disappointing but if anyone has a fix that'd be great.

Did you try the " -autoconfig" parameter?

I am having the same problem. I think I did try the " -autoconfig" parameter neumi5694 mentioned, but it didn't work.
I also ran the compatibility wizard, but that didn't help.
Is there a solution for this problem?

So, searching the internet I have been trying some stuff and will post what I have found and tried.
Found the suggestion it is from faulty video drivers, that the drivers are sometimes damaged from Windows updates. So I turned off the automatic hardware updating feature in Windows, uninstalled the drivers through programs first, and then Device Manager, making sure they were listed as generic video devices, then I installed newest drivers (which were already installed) and got the same error.

I saw the suggestion it is from having integrated and discrete video. The suggestion was to disable the integrated gpu through Device Manager. For some that worked, it didn't for me.

Other suggestion was that I needed a certain version of DirectX installed that should have installed when the game installed, but probably didn't. They went into their game folder, found a DirectX folder, went into the folder, found a DX installer, they clicked it and installed that version of DX and that fixed the issue for them. I don't have that folder or DX installer in this games folder, so this didn't work either.
Edit: I researched this, and, according to Microsoft support, if you have DirectX 12 installed, it's backwards compatible, so you can't install older versions on top of a new version, well, because the older version is in version 12.

Edit: Another suggestion was Run as Administrator, didn't work for me. As I previously mentioned, I tried the compatibility wizard as well, several times, that didn't work.
