So way back when LEGEND OF GRIMROCK came out, I needed a backstory for how my four character had come together. So I wrote an intro on the LoG forums - and one of the developers commented on it - which spurred me on to keep writing. I took a lot of liberties with the story as it progressed; and eventually even had the characters move into LoGII (all in the story, so that it flowed and explains how they end up on the Isle of Nex)...
