I'm rather embarrassed to be resorting to this, but I'm stuck on floor 4. I managed to complete all 4 subchambers on that level, retrieving 4 scrolls. I've tried putting them into the alcoves whose graffiti most seems to fit with the writing, but this hasn't done anything.

I admit, I can't quite remember the specifics, as I stopped playing/got distracted at this point when I was originally playing the game (when it came out), and have only just come back to it.

So, yes, any hints as to what I should do to get that portcullis blocking the stairs downwards out of the way would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Each scroll needs to be in the correct alcove at the same time to trigger the associated event. You may need to switch some of the scrolls around; there are a couple of ways that some of the statements *could* be concluded, but only one right way to conclude each (foreshadowing later events).
Simple as that? I did it twice - with several months' gap, as I said above - and got the same result. Still, I guess there's only 24 possibilities to try.
* SPOILER *

The correct placement should be:

--

Crimes forgotten / but never forgiven.
Eternally imprisoned / to depths beyond measure.
Put to sleep / but still dreaming.
Caverns still echoing / by his call.

--

Nothing ominous to see here... ;)
