D3D-GetDeviceCaps failed: D3DERR-NOTAVAILABLE

Background: Recently reformated hard drive due to redirect virus. Installed Windows 7 on Dell Inspiron 1564. Running this laptop on 46" LED LCD @ 1024 x 768 (must use this as monitor due to laptop screen being broken).

Solutions tried:
Reinstall from GOG
Deleted D3DX9_43.dll
Installed DirectX 9 from multiple links found in these forums
Ran Legend of GrimRock Hardware Test
Attempted to update video/sound drivers via Dell but website is kind of murky (computer runs integrated graphics card).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, ran this on my nephew's computer all weekend and am addicted!

Thanks
While I sadly do not have the solution I will give you a brief explanation as to what causes the error you are having.

It seems that Grimrock is calling a Direct3D function which is not supported by your graphics card. This seems strange as you are running the integrated card on an i3, so this might just be a driver issue.
Let's hope someone else can give a more thorough explanation.
Hi There.

Without the ServiceTag i can only assume your System Specs.
This system was also offered with an additional ATI Mobility Radeon GPU. I would say - check your device manager - maybe some device are not installed.

the drivers on the Dell Webpage are rather old(but they should still work).

You can always download the latest driver for the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator directly from Intel:

Windows 7 / Vista 64 Bit
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=20842&keyword=%22Graphics+Media+Accelerator+HD+%22&lang=eng

Windows 7 / Vista 32Bit:
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=20840&keyword=%22Graphics+Media+Accelerator+HD+%22&lang=eng

If you have the optional ATI GPU(4330 or 5450) you can download the driver here:
For Windows 7 32 and 64 Bit:
ftp://ftp.dell.com/video/R265297.exe

All other drivers are located here:
http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/DriversHome/?c=us&s=bsd&cs=04&l=en

I hope your system didn't hit the ground and that this is the reason for the broken display and os reinstallation.

Anyway good luck! And when it works have fun with this awesome game :)
WOW! That worked! Downloaded the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator for 64 bit and its running like a charm. Thanks so much, now back to the green slimes! BTW: It was a 1 year old jumping from couch onto computer which broke screen :o

You can change your Hard drive. Someone you see this error because of bad hard drive or bad sector in hard drive you can solve this issue by replacing your hard drive like Seagate ST2000DL003
