Obviously it brightens the view up, but i can still see fairly fine without it. So is there any other reason to use it? Like, does it let you hit better, allow rogues to spot things easier? Just curious if its all that important.

Edit: And sorry, this is for LoL1. Haven't played the other games.

All the lantern does is brighten the view. It's possible to completely run out of oil and then you won't be able to see very well in caves, but it has no impact on the ability to complete the game.

Huh. I went through almost the entire first big cave before I realized I didn't have it lit. Then it made me wonder if I should be conserving the oil for a later dungeon where it was actually hard to see without it or if there was something else in play involving it. Its a pity they didn't make it a little more useful, like at least not being able to see half as far without it.

I am quite enjoying the game though.

Lands of Lore 1 is one of my favourites. I still play through it again every now and then. Savour it!
I always had much more oil then I needed. I even used it to weigh down pressure plates. You can still see in the dark, but it puts unnecessary strain on your eyes.
