Yes, the respawn rates can get ridiculous at times. To the point where one is completely overwhelmed with nowhere to retreat to.

The problem is that the monsters keep respawning as long as you are on the same level, so try sleeping on those levels that have no monsters or at least types of monsters that you can easily defeat, this allows you do decimate their numbers to a manageable amount.

Apart from that it's all about finding the monster's weaknesses (always try all the spells and watch the size of the blood splatter).
In my third playthrough, when I knew exactly where all the keys were, I rushed through the mines and found it to be dissapointingly empty. I probably didn't allow enough time for the monsters to spawn in sufficient numbers. The rock monsters were the most annoying because once I ran out of mana for the freeze spell, I couldn't harm them.

On the other hand, I got quickly overwhelmed by annoying hornets later.

I keep backing away and use valkyrie and another bow to do damage but can be hard sometimes when you looking for the items to get the machine running.

Those hornets can be a pain as well keeping interupting your sleep and really hard to hit with melee weapons.

The best way to keep the wasp-like creatures in the mines from respawning is to burn their nests with a fireball spell. The nests are on certain sections of the wall. You have to fight your way to it and fireball the nest, but at least then you aren't dealing with endless monsters.
