I'm completely flabbergasted by this, I read the manual but it doesn't help, especially the usage of salve and aloe, I keep double clicking and dragging and dropping it on the characters but nothing seens to work.

Easy: left-click click on the item in the inventory so that the cursor turns into that item, then RIGHT-click on a character portrait. Try it with different items, I bet you didn't know some of them could be used.
