UGE? Shit, i havent seen that app since 96, F'n nostalga there
Marking this for visibility, I am trying some stuff as well with this game of childhood, firstly with Lands 1 then with Lands 2. I use HxD hex editor.

Found a way to add working items to the inventory, for example items in the Save Game of 'Undertaker' from LandsOfLore.DE

http://www.landsoflore.de/board/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=742

So that you can have your own GOG version save game with these items, not to get this old version save with No Music and Sound and only playing as Michael.

In order to replace the 'Illegal' Item (dummy item with Arrow image) with actual items:

It is not enough to just copy+paste the offsets 618-713, this range contains the items (617 is for the heroes' location in the world - Draracle's Caves, White Tower, Northland Forest, etc..) but if you don't copy other offsets from this save you will get 'Illegal items' or items that the game allows you to have - Salve, Aloe, Ginseng, you can't get too advanced items, they will be Dummy items,

I found that you need to copy the offsets from this save in the range: offset 1200-1599 (though based on how late the item you want is located in the game, you may go as far as 3-5 thousandth+ offset
, this range seems to identify the items and give you properly working icons for the items and really having the items, not Dummy Items.

Here is my version of a save with Conrad that includes some items from Undertaker's save plus a few even better ones. Save is made with the current GOG Lands of Lore version of the game, has sound and no bugs. (Download the attachment in this post, rename file extension from 'jpg' to DAT and rename the file name if needed)

The range of offset 717-1200 (or could be Offset 600-607) is containing the music and sound of the game because if you load the Saved game from the link by Undertaker where you start as Michael, you will notice there is no music/sound.

NOTE: view the number of offsets as Decimal when I say go to number 618th -713th offset etc.

In order to get Dawn as explained on the web - count 12 bytes or offsets of the last letter of the character you want to replace e.g Bacatta, if you count 12 offsets from his last letter 'a' you will get to a Hex that shows 03 in the offset, this is his portrait. Change him to 07. and you get Dawn portrait. But there is no actual Dawn character, still Bacatta with Dawn's portrait and Dawn's Equipment Body. You can change any hero's portrait with Dawn's. I replaced 06 Paulson with her when he joins the heroes.

NOTE2: 48 to 50 offsets (bytes) after the character name's last letter is the MAX LIFE value (around offset # 135 for first hero). Two offsets before Max Life is CURRENT LIFE. Two offsets/bytes after Max Life is the CURRENT MANA but another 2 from Current Mana is MAX MANA.

In the range 4th 5th 6th 7th offsets after the Mage Level is Fighter XP (5E F4 00 00 to make it blank, maybe 4 offsets are taken by the XP, for all types - Fighter, Mage, Rogue); next 4 offsets after the 4 offsets for Fighter XP is Rogue XP; next 4 offsets after the 4 offsets for Rogue XP is Mage XP

Location on the map is at offset 596, for 597 increase by 1 to move the party much more on the south, subtract 1 to move much more on the north. That is, if with changing only 596 you want to move South or North, you cannot go below 00 or higher than FF when adding 20 (to move 1 position south), subtracting 20 (to move 1 square north), modifying 597 will allow you to move much more on the south or north without exceeding the 00 or FF values.

Offset 1121 - Lantern state, 64 is just filled up by Oil Flask. FF to remain full for longest possible time before it starts running lower.

Spells

Use ONLY offsets 1142-1148. DO NOT replace offset 1149 1150 with anything to add e.g. Caustic fog or Vortex as an 8th or 9th spell, at first it will work but this may make your explored maps go blank and the game may even freeze, corrupts the save. 1149 and 1150 are for Maps, better replace any of your existing 7 spells with them.

00 Spark
01 Heal
02 Freeze
03 Fireball
04 Hand of Fate
05 Mist of Doom
06 Lightning
07 Vortex
08 Caustic fog
53 (or 60) Guardian (Text Subtitles instead no spell name in the spell scroll)

•Character levels are easy to find and change: just look for three bytes which have values of levels (offset is +100 bytes from first byte of character’s name).

•You can replace one character with another! It works for second and third character in party. At offset of +12 bytes from first byte of character’s name there is a byte which controls character. Values are: 03 for Bacatta, 04 for Lora, 06 for Paulson, and 07 for Dawn. Surprize, it seems that Dawn was designed as playable character, but was removed before game release.

•You can change placement of party on the map by changing two bytes located at offset +585 from start of file. Add 1 to move party to the east, subsctact 1 to move party to the west. To move party south or north you need to add/subscrtact hex value 20. If first byte is “overloaded” then add 1 to second byte.

•List of known spells is stored in bytes starting from offset +1131. Each byte represents a row in your magic atlas. Value FF means that this row is not used. Value 0 is for spark, 1 for heal, 2 for freeze, 3 for fireball, 4 for hand of fate, 5 for mist of doom and 6 for lightning. Value 7 is for spell “Vortex”, which doesn’t work. Values 8 and 9 are for spell “Caustic fog”, which is the same thing as using green skull. It seems that those last two spells were disabled in game before release.

Do you know where the x/y/z coordinates are in the save game file?

*edit*

A) I thought this was for LOL:GoD

B) You already listed the x/y/z info anyway.

In other worse, never mind!

^ The thread is for Lands 1. I have created a thread about LoL:G but I don't know anything about it, I needed to know where music is chosen for each level but I will ask again when I get back to LoL:G.

The deal with location in Lands 1 is - see my long post where I start 'Location on the map is at offset 596...'

This was created recently. Very in depth and amazing.
^ Good find with the editor but how about places on the map you never thought existed! Where is Nathaniel?? Why didn't they keep him hidden. Check out the maps and the Dungeons!

EDIT:
Looks like I wasn't the first to discover those secret places :( .... someone has made it and to the end

Hello all, I am the creator of the Scotia editor. My trainer originally only supported the savefiles of the Disk version of Lands of Lore - Throne of Chaos. This post is just to let you know that I just released a v0.2 of my trainer that now supports the LOL CD-Rom savefiles (so the savefiles of the GOG version of the game), you can download it at the link posted by Gonecatwild just above.

Also, in response to Emtr, my trainer allows you to move your party virtually anywhere in all the maps of the game, including at the unknown places you mention (most of them are indicated on the maps in my editor), to do that: launch Scotia.exe from inside your LOL folder > Load existing game > select the one you want to change > hit the "Compass" icon button at the bottom left of the program (near the "Save" icon button) > OK to the small popup window > "MOVE CAMP" > Choose any map you want > Left click anywhere on the map to move your characters (and Right click to change the direction they are facing)

Cheers,
mougino
^ Thank you for doing the editor, this is the best editor for Lands of Lore 1 and the only one of its kind! I like that you made it with the same interface as the game, makes it feel ingame and is easy to navigate.

One may still want to rely on Hex Editing for some things but even if you Hex Edit with a separate tool, this editor explains a lot what each Offset in a save is for, so that you know what to change. Thanks to Scotia editor I was able to remove items with same Hex Code which duplication using hex editor caused the game to freeze if dropped on the ground. Newly added same items have separate hex codes and naturally won't crash the game. as if you found them in the world. Editors like UGE are too full of bugs and I never used such primitive tool really, so good for this one.

Yes also good navigation through the world, also well made. I emailed you some possible things that may need fixing as they cause crashes, also offering you to add a few more items.

Download the above save _Save000.jpg and rename 'jpg' to DAT to try these things.

Items (also some items are from the site I linked last time with rare icons and items) - the less buggy ones that I think can be used I have in the new save file I linked

MOST STABLE

Poison Dart- the most stable item, will never cause corruption or crash, works 100% can be added

Vortex Scroll - if attempt to learn and don't have already may say 'Insert CD' and will exit the game but will not corrupt the save, people could have it as misc item without using it, just to show it is there, if already have vortex, you will consume it like any other scroll of already existing spell, game will never crash or freeze

Spike unless it turns into another item, always works well when used, takes damage and can even kill if big dmg, damage based on hero strength

^ These items will never cause problems

Also add the Guardian Sword (Orb) as a spell, works well and no errors/corruption it works just like Caustic Fog

ALMOST FULLY STABLE

ʷₚi▚ (Blue Plate Mail in Dawn's Shield Slot) - greatly increases defense and attack, like no other item, also stable, does not cause any errors but may sometimes upon drop cause a freeze, the Strength/Protection points it gives you are stable (some items I did not include may make a mess and make your hero stats go negative)

(Whole Truth) in Dawn's Weapon can be placed as a weapon or shield, also should never cause any crashes I think it once did but not sure if that item did it, the Strength/protection points it gives you are stable like the Blue plate mail

Green Skull placed as a ring in First Hero, greatly increases Attack / Defense, Strength/Protection points it gives you are stable like the Blue plate mail

Quarrel never seen it making any problems, just once but it may have been from another item, works fine

UNSTABLE BUT WONT CORRUPT - either work fine or appear as Illegal items that do nothing, you will not get crash or freeze from them

Ice Bolt works mostly if the map on which you are has such a trap, otherwise may become illegal item, takes real damage to enemies like any trap

Sling - changes icon often, it is an item that can be placed on the neck, has fireball missile when thrown, no damage

Muck - a monster spit missile, may turn into another but regular item, should not cause much or any trouble

UNSTABLE, CAN CORRUPT SAVE

(Yellow Potion) - while such item, it can be placed on the neck, it can change and if it changes to a corrupt item, expect game freeze, better not save the game if you see weird colors or pixels as a result of it, or that will corrupt the save

Dispel if it works can be used as a missile and cause damage like the pain, the Ice bolt and the Spike but often times may turn into a corrupted item that if clicked may freeze the game, never save the game if you see blank item in the inventory or weird pixels appearing in the game

Pain - after using that item, the game may freeze especially if you click the 3rd hero's equipment

Ildu - an item I never added because it is full of bugs, any items that have some description when you click them are corrupted, better reload save and don't ever save with such items

Arrows, other items highly corrupted that I skipped because they are certain to corrupt the game

In other words handle with care and backup save regularly when using anything other than the MOST STABLE items that work 100%
