I played before the Sierra free version of BAK. It had a rather nasty bug. Let me explain it:

I like to advance my skills for Locklear in the first chapter. It's not easy but you can have a 100% to a all skills Locklear if you explore/battle/do all the quests/bard/sell almost everything/use skills and finally buy books from stores. Near the end of the chapter I got a bit over 31000 gold and I spent it all on books and training. However when you use books time will pass very fast and you have to use a lot of food rations. Also as the time passes using books your heroes health will rise quite fast. At the end I had Gorath with a 400 total health. It sounds like building a tank but sadly there is a bug that does not allow your hero to heal battle damage not even in temples and in the end you will die. It looks like that health points that go over a certain limit would bust the healing system.

Here is my question: was the bug solved in the GOG BAK version ?

I am curious if anyone can answer this question. I used to hit this bug every time I played just by being a power leveler. I remember the last time I played I didn't read any books as I had thought this was what caused the bug, but I still was hit with it near the end of the game. Maybe because I explore too much and waste too much time? I really want to play the game again, but I am worried the same thing will happen to me. Playing Antara instead right now and really missing Krondor as it is so much better.

Unrelated, Krondor is also displaying in an odd stretched mode where the bottom of the screen is a black bar and the game is extending to fill the entirety of my widescreen monitor. With the bar at the bottom it is in super widescreen mode and so stretched it's quite weird to play.

In the dosboxBAK.conf file change the following:

fullresolution=1080x768
windowresolution=1080x768

I tried a few different settings and that one gave me the best fit. Not so tiny I had to squint and not so large that the pixels were crazy big and stretched. Save a copy of the file before you make your changes.

This is probably something you'll need to test to see whether it still happens, since I don't think it's been reported on here. I do remember it happening, and IIRC it's because those values were handled as signed integers (8-bit), so as soon as health or stamina go over 127 it becomes glitchy. Max health and stamina goes up very slowly as a function of time passed; reading books doesn't cause it directly but since you pass so much time when reading them it's the most likely way to hit this point.

madeaj has good advice for windowed mode, but you should also check your graphics card scaling options to see if you can get fullscreen to work properly. There should be an option in there for "maintain aspect ratio", make sure it's checked. That should have the game display with black bars on the sides instead of on the bottom.

If this still doesn't work, use the "Grpahic Mode setup" utility that GOG provides with the game (check the start menu shortcut) and try using different settings.

Also, you should open the configuration file and change the line that says "aspect=false" to "aspect=true". Otherwise, the game will be very slightly stretched horizontally even if you get your scaling working properly. This is because the game runs at 320x200, which is NOT a 4:3 resolution, but it's supposed to be displayed in 4:3 aspect ratio, with non-square pixels. The "aspect=true" forces non-square pixels to make the game look the way it was intended.
Thanks guys, all fixed. I love GOG for taking all of the work out of running Krondor on a modern OS :) Simple fix and everything is great again. Thanks so much!
