Many know this, Betrayal in Antara crashes at the end of cutscenes and returns to the desktop.
The GOG version has too large caches specified in the RESOURCE.WIN file.
In the original game on CD's, which I still own, the cache values are
"cacheSize1=600" and "cacheSize3=100".
If you adjust the values in the RESOURCE.INI, the game runs without errors.
I hope this works for everyone :)
Adjusted this as suggested, unfortunately no effect on the crash at the end of chapter1 cut-scene

Alas, didn't work for me either. It'll run through the chapter 1 intro without crashing occasionally, but not every time. Out of curiosity are you using the XP patch that the GOG version comes with?

Hi there,
I don't use the XP path, but as a LINUX user I play in the WINE engine, which can be easily adapted. So you can set any background from WIN3 to WIN10 with just one click.
There is also for Windows itself :)
It is very worthwhile for older games.

Definitely sounds useful. I had tried boxed wine with this awhile back but was unable to get it running. I am planning on getting a Steam Deck in the future, which I understand runs a Linux OS, so I may try it again then!
Well. After playing with the settings way too much, I believe I've figured out what is causing the instability when playing cut scenes.

useDirectSound=TRUE
After setting this to "FALSE" I was able to play through the opening cinematics on a fresh install multiple times without crashing. The problem is that setting this to "FALSE" introduces popping into the speech. This is probably why, in an attempt to mitigate this, there were the changes made to the "cacheSize" amounts that catsrealm\Bolgahni had noticed.

I was able to minimize the amount of popping by doing the following:
First: Set Betrayal in Antara to run in XP (Sp2) compatibility mode (The patch that GOG included was designed for XP\Vista)
Second: Edit these values in the game's RESOURCE.WIN to the following:

cacheSize1=600
resCDisc=%INSTALLDIR%
useDirectSound=FALSE
cacheSize3=100

@draken123 If you get a chance, would you mind trying the above changes with your setup and seeing if you can get through the cut-scene? I gave it 3 runs myself and had no issues (beyond a couple sound pops) after making the above changes....

@catsrealm\Bolgahni Thanks for bringing these differences to everyone's notice!

yes, I have exactly these settings in the RESSOURCE.WIN too and that under "WIN-XP"-emulation.
I'm halfway through the game and haven't had another crash.

Yes, that's worked! Finally I was able to see both the Prologue and Chapter1 intros until the the end. Thank you a lot @Crimson_T and @catsrealm !
I can also confirm that this fix worked! (Also have the compatibility mode set to windows XP SP2)
Windows 11 user.
I changed the .WIN file to these settings and ran XP S2 compatibility but still am crashing every time I try to click the cabin to start the cutscene at the end of Chapter 6, any suggestions?
I know this is old but I'm replaying the game and thank you
for the fist time I've been able to watch the cutscenes
though i've only started chapter 2 atm before I was never able to watch the opening scene nor any of the chapters without it crashing or I having to quickly hit esc to bypass them

as a side note I also run the game in administrator mode

hehe the game has only unexpectedly crashed once so far
