try this:

from the gog community boards: don`t know who wrote this, sorry.

" I encountered this too, and I found the solution. Fortunately I have an old copy myself (it runs on XP but not Windows 7 which is why I got this from GOG). It seems they left out one of the files - starttxt.txt. Without this file, the game will crash in Windows XP, and display garbage text on the main menu in Windows 7.
Just create a file called "starttxt.txt" and paste these lines into it. It should work fine after that - it does for me."

1) Don't bump old threads with a totally unrelated question.
2) You got a reply at the SierraHelp forum and didn't bother to reply...
3) I guess I'm not the only one who doesn't get the meaning of "severe file".

If you're referring to the game files. Well, GOG.com is selling it...

On topic. yes the GOG release has missing lines in the file, and that causes the splash screen class name to be set from random memory, what Windows XP doesn't like that much.
