I am playing through the DOS version of the game through ScummVM and I've nearly finished it. I'm up to the part where I'm wandering the downstairs part of Mordack's castle and the blue creature appears randomly in the hallway and dining room downstairs. I've already let it capture me once, so I can't get captured by it again.

Unfortunately, it takes an age for the beast to appear, and when it does, it moves really really fast. Too fast for me to react. It's a real jump scare because the music is so quiet and ominous before it does appear. It moves much slower in let's play videos on Youtube. Perhaps I should just start again in Dosbox since this may be an issue with ScummVM.
You can adjust the speed of the game in the top menu. I would recommend going to an area where he shows up and turn the speed way down and wait a few seconds to see if he shows up. I've played the game in ScummVM and DosBox and managed to get past the creature in both.
So far I've tried to do that. I've found the game speed only affects the speed of Graham's walking (unless there's another speed control in ScummVM that I haven't played with). Maybe my computer is just too fast.

Anyway, I've nearly gotten up to the same point in the DosBox package that GOG supplied. I'll see if it's any different there.

It took me about a half hour to finagle Graham and the blue monster to do the correct action. I ended up looking at a let's play and saving in the exact spot that they had Graham at. Here's the video (jump to the 3 minute mark) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oZadckfqIJc
Thanks for your help everyone. I found the monster did move at the correct speed in Dosbox (it actually moves at the same speed as Graham's walking in Dosbox, so I made it easier by turning the speed down - something which wasn't working in ScummVM), and I managed to beat the game.

It is easier to get the monster if you manage to get to that area south of the dining room before seeing it. Maybe it's because you know exactly where it's going to pop up and you can stand far away from the doorway to give yourself more time.

Now onto Kings Quest 6!
